| people: a mistakehttp://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/07/17/presidential.putdown.ap/index.html
as always, while people may not have the initiative to change anything, to right any wrongs, or to generally give a crap about any sort of injustice, the wheels of democracy start turning when it's time to make a lame joke about the president!
you know all those places in the old testament where it says God repented himself for having ever made people in the first place? do you get the impression that if there were another book for the Bible written today, it would just be that phrase, over and over?

| pray for me. there are plenty of people in the world whose needs are more serious than my own, but i'm at a place in my life where i'm quickly giving up hope.
and when it goes, it tends to take everything else good with it.

| the tubby smith corollaryhello xanga, old friend.
for quite awhile now, i've been telling people about my comparison between the state of UK basketball and the state of the country. now, for all the internet to see, i give you the tubby smith corollary.
orlando "tubby" smith was head men's basketball coach at UK for 10 seasons, beginning in 97-98 and ending with the 06-07 season. while he won a championship in his first season, he was never quite accepted by the UK fanbase. i won't get into a drawn out basketball discussion here, but suffice it to say that there were things he did not do well--he didn't choose his staff particularly well, wasn't the best recruiter. however, he was one of the best coaches in college basketball and got a lot of criticism he didn't deserve.
when he left for minnesota after the 07 season, i thought it would be good for everyone involved. a fresh start for tubby, a fresh start for the program, and the fanbase would finally see that eliminating the whipping boy wouldn't solve everything overnight--there were problems and realities to face that had nothing to do with tubby smith, and the continued existence of those problems and realities after the entrance of a new coach would make the fans take notice of what really needed to be fixed.
enter billy clyde gillispie.
the new coach comes in and immediately faces hard times. finally, i say to myself, people will realize there were things going wrong that had nothing to do with tubby.
but then everyone in the state just said, "see, this is the mess tubby left us in." they were finding ways to blame the whipping boy even after it was clear that the problems were unrelated to the things he did.
compare to the current situation in the US:
george w bush has been a very unpopular president. he has done some legitimately unwise things, but many of the nation's problems have nothing to do with anything he's done. (again, no need for specifics or a debate here to make my point.)
now, i have news for everyone, especially those naive souls who believe barack obama pisses liquid gold and saves the world from sin--there will still be problems in this country after the bush presidency ends, whether the new president is obama, mccain, or a third party candidate (read: obama or mccain). i would love to believe that this will open people's eyes, show them that there are problems that we all have to work to solve, that we all have to quit looking for someone to blame and start accepting accountability and responsibility for ourselves.
but i fear that the response will be, "see, this is the mess bush left us in."
to quote an unlikely source, stop pointing fingers and take some blame, pull your future away from the flames, open up your mind and start to live.
give of yourself. take stock of what you really need in your life to be happy. stop looking to someone else to effect a change that will heal our wounds, and change yourself. consider others. love.
then we'll see real change.

Well, the year's almost over, so here's one final post. This one is just to tell you that I wrote a new post on myspace. I don't want to copy and paste it because I'm lazy, and apparently typing this post is easier than copying and pasting (didn't think this through), so if you're not a loser, go read it.
l33t new year's!
