Our day at the Houston Rodeo

Since I was on spring break, we took the family out for a day trip the Houston Rodeo last Thursday...

Here's Lydia and us having a great time in front of some cows...

Everything there was deep fried (e.g. deep-fried bananas, cheesecake, twinkies, mushrooms, etc...).  I relucantly bought this neat fried curly potato chip thing (it was Viv's idea), but it turned out to be pretty good!

Lydia had so much fun, she couldn't wait to get home to take a nap.

Our favorite part of the rodeo was the pig race:

The one constant in our life during the past 5 years

They're building a new mall next to our home (literally 3 minutes away) and we're REALLY excited about it.  From what I hear, our town (Pearland) used to be predominantly farmland before people began to frantically develop it.  You can still see cows, chickens, and barns within a few minutes of our place if one were to drive the direction opposite our the closest highway.

In any case, I've almost gotten into a few traffic accidents while driving by the area where they are building the mall.  Every once in a while, there will be a new sign indicating a store or restaurant that will be part of the mall.  It feels like a I'm playing the lottery whenever a new sign comes up and I discover what we'll soon have easy access to.  First, I was REALLY happy about the Taco Cabana (I LOVE TACO CABANA).  Then, I was really excited about BJ's Restaurant (I used to go to their happy hour in California).  Just yesterday, I found out that we're going to have Red Robin too!

Red Robin is now officially the one constant in our crazy life journey these past 5 years.  We lived next to a Red Robin in Santa Clara (there's one in rivermark), in La Habra (there's one on Beach & Imperial Hwy), in Vancouver (there's one in Metrotown and across the US border in Bellingham, WA).  I love their fries and tortilla soup!

On Being Cool

I often like to think that at some point in the past, people thought I was 'cool.'  I remember when I used to be obsessed (jokingly, of course) over my 'cool hair' or my purple Ford Taurus (again, being sarcastic..).  However, whatever coolness I may have had in the past now appears to be completely gone as I'm approaching my 30's as a married guy with a kid.  Here are some recent highlights:
  • I often catch myself randomly singing and humming the phrase 'baby beluga from the deep blue sea...' (Lydia's favorite song) in the most inopportune times (e.g. elevators, in the middle of adult conversations, etc...)
  • I don't play any competitive/contact sports anymore
  • I'm getting into gardening
  • I was legitimately excited over Pampers diapers being on sale at HEB last week
  • If it wasn't for Vivian, I'd be walking around with my shirts tucked in
  • My faculty adviser shook her head and explained to me the meaning of the terms: 'krunk,' 'boo,' 'freak,' and 'cosign'
