.:: camera question - help!  ::.

for you experienced dslr gals out there..

so it's about time i get my first dslr camera. i found that the rebel XTi is perfect for me in terms of what i need for a great price...

my question is -- should i order the XTi as the body only, or with the kit lens?

i'm sure i'd want to upgrade the lens pretty fast, i just don't whether i should just get the kit lens, play around with it - and figure out which way and which lens i would want to buy..? or just get the body only and put the price difference to buying another lens right off the bat too?  (it's about an $80 difference..)  i have a feeling i'll mostly be using it to photograph family/people instead of landscaping...

TIA~!

if i were to do it again, i would do it separately. the lens that came with the camera was decent, but limiting. i never use it anymore. a decent lens makes a hugr difference in the photos. my lens was about $400 and it's very versatile. i just did a post on all my camera equipment if you're interested~ =)

a decent lens starts around 400; a good or great lens, up to 2000 depending on range, image stab, etc... whether you opt for the kit lens or not it really depends on your budget and what you'll be shooting.

i'd recommend actually just going with the kit lens until you learn more about what kind of lens you'll want to get to fit your needs. i think lenses should be an investment.

getting the kit lens s fine. it will still give you some great shots and is a good leans to start with, as you learn about your camera. you can always upgrade later. when i bought my DSLR, i also got the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 to play around with in addition to the kit lens. it's only about $80 and gives great shots (especially portraits). it's a very great lens for the low price.

i agree with surly girl. especially since you're just starting off. once you get the hang of it and then start researching for an upgraded lens. there's so many choices out there so you really wanna do your homework on what it is that you're looking for in a lens.

I bought the Canon XTI with the kit lens. I wanted to get used to the camera and be able to take pictures right away. The kit lens was pretty descent. I would definitely get the kit lens with the camera and upgrade later.

@munchkincho -

the digital rebel xti is a great "starter" slr, from what we've heard it's a great camera, especially for the price.  i would get the kit, just in case you have a hard time finding a lens you want.  at least you'll have something to use until you find the lens that best suits your needs.  and $80 but the lens is dirt cheap (hubby wants one for his canon 30D that is like $5k, no joke).  and don't forget to get a huge memory card too!!  have fun!  and post pictures!  lol...
