I went downtown this morning to pick up mail from the main post office in the pouring rain. After circling countless city blocks in intricate one-way patterns, I trudged three blocks in the pouring rain to the post office. When I came out, it was still pouring rain, and it came down even harder as I approached my car and realized... I'd locked my keys in the car.

Well, thank goodness for the fact that my truck's rear sliding-pane windows had a broken lock. (Don't tell anyone. If they knew, my truck would be stolen in a heartbeat. =X) So I pried open the windows, dumped the mail into the back seat-row, and struggled, wiggled, and otherwise pushed and prodded myself in further until my top half was inside. My posterior was still getting a shower.

AND IT WAS AT THAT MOMENT THAT A POLICEMAN CAME. =X

Standing snuggly under an umbrella, he wanted to know what the heck I was doing, and said so in these exact words: "What the heck are you doing?"
"Um, I'm trying to unlock my car door."
"Why aren't you going in the conventional way?"
"Because my keys are locked in the car."
"I'm sure they are. Can I see your ID?"
"Yes. I'm not stealing this car, officer. I can recite my car's VIN to you if you like."
"That won't be necessary; but I must say, it looks mighty suspicious when someone's legs are waving out the back of a truck."

I was rescued when the parking meter went "Ding!"
"You'd better go," said Mr. Officer.
     "I'd better go, " said I.

And I went.

Friday, January 13, 2006

Look! Look! Either click here, or browse below to the article which I have so conveniently provided, so that you really have no excuse not to read it:

Poll: Most can't name justices
Most Americans can't name a single justice on the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a survey.

By Cary O'Reilly | Bloomberg News

Only 43 percent of American adults can name at least one justice, according to the survey conducted by the FindLaw.com Web site. Retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was the most frequently identified, cited by 27 percent of respondents. President Bush has nominated Judge Samuel Alito to replace O'Connor.

The December 2005 survey of 1,000 adults nationwide found that 16 percent of Americans could name Chief Justice John Roberts as a member of the high court. None of those surveyed were able to name all nine justices.

The survey, which has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points, was conducted for FindLaw.com by Ipsos Public Affairs.

Some respondents incorrectly named Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., the late Justice Thurgood Marshall and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California as current justices.

---------------------------
