I don’t
want to write a diary. As long as your thoughts are on paper, it’s
fine. But diaries? A lot of assignments I don’t feel like doing ,
but this is the first one that makes me want to run. The thoughts I’m
having now are bad ones. I can’t write them.

And yet… I have the
desire to write the best diary of all.

I want to be good.

Wrong.

I want to be terrific.

Wrong.

I have to be terrific.

And that’s wrong. I
can feel that I’m going to pay. Some awful price is waiting for me,
like a monster in the dark.

- Juvenilia, Chapter 1

This is the umpteenth time I've felt this way. My morale has been lowered impeccably during the last few days. Not comfortable with sharing, just so you know, it involves a hell lot of drama, relationship problems and disturbing revelations about both my physical and mental health from various sources.

Yeah.

And being sick with the flu today does not help to improve my mood. :/
words lost in the moment

Ahem.

I've returned back to civilisation.

After five days of suffering in OBS at Pulau Ubin.

I am happy.

Following Kerry's style:

I don't have to:

Wake up at 5 am every morning to unpitch tents in the dark.
Seriously, I was nearly half-blind in the dark. Okay, not so much when
we were at campsite 1 and 2. I'm specifically talking about the
Jelutong campsite (screw the spelling, I don't care right now).

Eat squashed food for breakfast and lunch 90% of the time.
Our rations were okay, but there was like, an overdose of bread or
something. I mean, eight loaves of bread? Kind of overdoing it. Not to
mention the last four loaves we had on Day 5 were really really badly
squashed. Oh, and don't forget the crushed biscuits and fruit. The food
was good though. Chocolate caaaakkkkeeee. 8D

Open cans with a jacknife. I prefer my can opener kthx. My thumb hurt from trying to push the knife into the can, but I finished it, so yay me. ♥

Trek for ages carrying heavy backpacks.
No kidding about this one. I was nearly bent over 90 degrees because my
bag was heavy. It was like... I think 10kg? Thank goodness for the
thunderstorm that hit, at least we got to rest for a while despite
being soaked to the bone.

Wake up at 1.30 AM to do sentry duty at a public campsite.
It was damn scary. Because there's totally no light except for a few
lamp posts and our torchlights (which I lost mine on Day 5, so I'm
sad), and there's a possibility of wild dogs and wild boars coming out
from nowhere and the sea can be kind of scary when the entire place is SILENT. So yes, sentry duty? Not one of the highlights of OBS.

Suffer from sandfly and mosquito bites.
THANK YOU, INSECT REPELLENT (kudos to Kerry for this one). I'd never
thought I'd say this, but Tiger Balm helps on those bites. :D

Take showers in under 5 minutes.
This is horror, I tell you. You have to literally RUSH for the toilet,
or you'll not get a chance to bathe. I washed my hair with shampoo at
the washing point after our one-hour kayak session, and ran to the
toilet to shower and get the sand and seawater out of me. I still ended
up being one of the last. Pffft.

Run 200 metres to the nearest toilet when Nature calls. I AM SERIOUS.

Cook with solid fuel tablets, which emit noxious fumes. Not forgetting that time we burnt the rice.

Kayak for 9 solid hours over a distance of 15+ km.
(Plus because we had to go a slight detour). I'd probably do it again
if I had to. Because it was rather fun! (: We really kayaked 3/4 of
Pulau Ubin's perimeter. It was tiring. Definitely.

And after kayaking for nine hours straight:

Biscuits, buns and muesli bars save the day. They gave me the energy boost after my arm DIED in the first two hours of kayaking.

You do your business in the sea.
No kidding. You hop off your kayak, get into the cold water, and pee
there. Gross, but to quote Mingxuan, "excellent team bonding session,
peeing is."

You get sunburnt very very easily.
Because your hands keep dipping into the water when you kayak, the
sunblock is washed off really easily and you get burnt so much that you
look like a lobster. >| (Ergo, mine)

Your arms ache like crazy during and after the expedition.
My arms were going to break at any moment. And yes, blisters were my
good friend. And not to mention, the kayaks were heavy like shit.

You desperately want to shower.
But you can't since you have to wash all the kayaks and get rid of all
the rubbish inside. So, you settle for hosing yourself down with the
water that's supposed to be for the kayaks.

Highlights of OBS:

Rockclimbing.
Funnnn. :DDDD Because I got over my fear of heights. Somewhat. And the
teachers were there too, on the second day! They're too free without
having us to turn all their hairs gray.

Outdoor cooking. I think it's the most fun of all the food-related stuff I had to do, being food IC. Especially on the last day, omg.

Theresa's apple crumble. THAT WAS THE BEST DESSERT EVER IN OBS KTHX.

Getting to sleep. I needed every single SECOND of that much needed 6 hours.

Memorable moments:

When the teachers came to visit on the second day.
We all went "Ohmytian, really? They're here?! EVEN SIOW JUNIOR?!"
Hahaha. I think we all went hyper and everything. But then again, the
teachers must have been really free to come and visit us. Must be
because we aren't there to drive them crazy for the entire week. Yeah,
so they watched us rock-climb and everything.

During the kayaking expedition.
My arm died in the first two hours, and then I had attention from the
instructors and everything because I was at the back of the fleet, even
behind the sweepers. Then I switched partners, ate a kaya bun, gulped
down half my remaining water, and chionged all the way to the front,
just behind Sam Low and Zanita, who were leading the expedition. Very
very fulfilling. ;D And then Syahirah and I maintained our position,
all the way to the end and we were the third kayak after Sam to reach
the shore. We da coolest, yo.

Souvenir shopping! I have
never spent so much in my life in one go. Minus that time I was at
Kinokuniya. I bought one polo tee, one sleeveless tee, two photographs
and one notebook. Huichee, Regina and I spent like $96 in one order
form. 8D

Finally reaching civilisation. When we saw the MRT tracks at Punggol, we all cheered and laughed like crazy. Heartwarming, indeed.

Quotable Quotes:

"Guys, there's Singapore. Let's look over there, and feel sorry for ourselves." - Kerry C. (at Jelutong while washing up. Slightly edited because I can't remember exactly.)

*Massive cheering when the MRT track comes into view*
"Woah, you girls act like you never see MRT track before ah! Don't embarrass me can in front of the bus driver can?!"
*Some more cheering and laughing*
"Aiyoh, you girls very scary. I got one magic word for you: MacDonalds."
*Cheers even louder* - Mr. Poon and us (During the bus ride back to CGS)

"On Tuesday, you have to check your papers..."
"BURN THEM." - Mr. Poon and us (Also dring the bus ride back to CGS)

More to be added when I can remember them.

After OBS:

I will never ever take proper toileting facilities for granted. Ever again.

I will never ever take home-cooked food and drinks for granted ever again. I started treating coffee like a luxury already :/

After being deprived of music for so long, I am determined to sit through my entire iTunes library at least once.

The
first thing I ate after OBS was proper home-cooked fried bee hoon by my
grandma, who made it specially for me. I felt so loved. :'D And I was
grinning like an idiot at the living room while watching a movie with
my brother. It was almost pure heaven. AND I DRANK proper water. Not
those chlorinated and seawater-esque water you get from the taps at
Pulau Ubin. Drinkable, but it tasted all chemical-y.

And then I
took a full half-an-hour to shower, and I made sure I got out EVERY
single bit of sand and salt from my body. Bliss. I say again, utter
bliss.

I suddenly feel like sleeping for 15 hours straight,
which I think it's kind of impossible considering that I woke up at 5
am today. Again. D:

ARMSTRONG, FTW.
