NEW YORK - Pope John Paul II passed away Saturday. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church was recovering from throat surgery when he succumbed to fevers consequent to an infection. In a week that saw painful conflict over the meaning of life and suffering, the Pontiff grew unable to take sustenance orally. According to reports, his living will called for medical and scientific life support, and he was given a feeding tube. Late Thursday, he received extreme unction, the sacrament given the critically ill and dying, popularly called the Last Rites. During his 26 years in the Vatican's high seat, John Paul II confronted modernity and controversy. Many chided church doctrines of morality as blind to worldly realities of population and health, and Western notions of individual freedoms. But his harshest critics nonetheless acknowledged his commitment to ideals, as he spoke against war and economic inequality with equal vehemence. Then there was bravery: He'd received the Last Rites once before, in 1981, when he suffered an assassin's bullet. He survived--and sat down later to speak with the would-be killer, Mehmet Agca. During WWII, he'd risked death and much worse by helping Jews flee Hitler's legions invading his native Poland. After 1945, the Stalinist clampdown: The man born Karol Wojtyla was known to intimates in his country as "Wujek," or "Uncle," a nom de guerre given to him as a young student chaplain, when all religiosity was dangerous. To meet the faithful, he has traveled 775,000 miles, in 104 sojourns to some 130 countries; in 2000, he fulfilled a personal dream, visiting Jerusalem's Western Wall, and asking forgiveness for Catholic sins against Jews over the centuries. Pope John Paul II was 84.
