| | Welcome back to politics on this here blog (just so you know what's coming). Last time, I talked up Super Tuesday with presidential primaries and ward rivalries. Now we know the results.
John McCain cruised to Republican prominence, leading Mitt Romney to get behind him and Mike Huckabee vowing to trudge on (hoping for a multi-state miracle, which might very well not be provided by James Dobson's endorsement.). McCain's now got the elder Bush's approval, which might just be the final nail in the nominee coffin -- Ann Coulter's Clinton conservatism notwithstanding.
On the Democratic side, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are still going at it, swapping convention delegate leads and working the vote. Some aspect of their race might've been affected by a supposed Asian-American block vote in California (see 80-20 video from CNN for that), but it's still mighty close overall.
On the local front, Ira Silverstein trounced Bernard Stone in the 50th Ward Democratic committeeman race. The graphic you see up to the right comes from (Dog) Fight for the 50th, and it details the precinct victories by Ira over Bernard (with anything not red or pink falling on the Silverstein side of things). Now why is a committeeman race that important to a state senator like Ira and a Chicago alderman like Bernard? It's because this is pretty much a referendum on Stone's long grip on the 50th, held in no small part due to Daley's former support and alleged vote fraud. Dog Fight said it best in his "Ira Wins" post:
It's a great day to be a democrat, to be alive in the 50th. If Stone
resigns, his daughter is no longer the most likely replacement. And
it's probable that Stone will not run for re-election as alderman. It's
a GREAT DAY!
Let the race for 2011 begin! |
