Put the blame on VTR.

Oh man, I have found a colossal new time-suck:

"Oklahoma" meets men with flowerpots on their heads. Whip it good!

Worth it just for the kangaroo imitation about halfway through.

At many a college dance party, I wondered how to do the Safety Dance properly. Apparently it involves little more than making a big S shape with your arms. Having a dwarf for a sidekick enhances your cred.

I'm underwhelmed by this video, but the song still rocks.

Trippy. Love it.

George Michael was kind of hot in "Faith," but this is just frightening. A-boom-boom, boom-boom!

Wait for it... The good stuff doesn't start until about a minute in.

The pope, an acrobatic elephant, and "Courrrage!" Oh, and a Julia Roberts circa-Pretty Woman impersonator (Or is that really her? The video quality's too poor to tell.) The comment thread says it best: This video has everything but the kitchen sink. Thank God they kept the background white; I don't think I could have taken any more visual stimulation. (Side note: I never really understood why this song was picked as the introit to Pretty Woman.)

Probably the best '80s video ever.

Happiness is blooming all around her.

It's been more than two months since I posted. Where the heck have I been?

3 steps away from the computer, making this:

dress

Overall, I'm satisfied, although the zipper was a pain to do. And redo. After four unsuccessful tries, I finally just left it as-is, slightly exposed, instead of neatly tucked beneath a flap of fabric, as a lapped zipper should be. Heck, it was the first thing I've sewn in years; could've been a lot more disastrous. Also, the bodice didn't fit me quite right, so I had to add some serious darts to adjust it. If I make this pattern again, I think I'll just make a smaller size next time. There's a weird horizontal seam at the waistline, which is going to take some getting used to. I belted it for this picture, but the only matching belt I have looks a bit too fallish, so I'll probably go without, even though the sans-belt look looks like it's missing something. Eh. Next up, a really cool tunic dress that I'm super-excited about making.

75 feet or so away, building and growing this:

garden

We finally completed the beds at the end of May, and I was able to get most of the transplants and seeds in the ground by May 30. Better late than never! More details soon.

I had plenty of help:

alexwheelbarrow

Mt. Topsoil!

dirtpile

And, of course, 22 miles away, doing the job thing. Not much to say about that now, but hopefully there will be soon.

In other news, Alex and I will have been together three years as of tomorrow. It's strange to look back on my life three years ago. Life was so different, so uncertain then. Sure, there are uncertainties now, but I need and appreciate the stability my life has gained since those first post-college days. Alex's present to me was a Mary Poppins special-edition DVD. My favorite movie!

These are a few of my favorite things.

I promised pictures awhile back, so here we go.

First, I scored some cheap home decorator fabric at a store on the east side that was going out of business.

Did I write about this already? I don't even remember. It's been a month since I bought it. If I did, you can hear about it again. The stripe is a fabric I'd had my eye on at Jo-Ann's for a few months. I'm going to make roman shades for the window over the kitchen sink and the back door that's right next to the kitchen. The other two fabrics I just saw and fell in love with. The flowered pattern was so cute and went with the stripe so well that I bought a couple yards to make placemats or pillows, or maybe both. I think both of these fabrics were upwards of 60% off. Yes! The blue was marked down to $2/yard, so I bought several yards figuring I could make a dress out of it, even though it's heavier-weight home decorator fabric. But let me tell you, because it is h.d. fabric, it's something like five feet wide, so I ended up with a TON. I could probably make at least three dresses out of it, but that's going overboard, don't you think? Or, I could make little blue outfits for all of the Pinegarettes someday, and then we'd all sing and skip through the Austrian highlands. Awesome.

Second, meet my babies.

As you can see, I hooked up a relatively inexpensive shoplight to my relatively inexpensive Ikea bookshelf, so these guys are pretty happy here. However, the broccoli and cabbage are getting antsy. They're ready to go outside already.

Here's what else I have growing indoors: sweet peppers (red, yellow, brown), hot peppers (a Thai type and a jalapeno type), onions (these should probably go outside soon too...), tomatoes (four kinds), tomatillo, pak choi (probably also itching to go outside, now that I think about it), rosemary, oregano, basil, garlic chives, eggplant, honeydew melon, canteloupe, dahlias, asters, cosmos, zinnias, marigolds, coleus, lavender, and jicama (a total experiment, because it supposedly only grows in FL and southern TX).

I'm planting a ton of other stuff outside too. (Er, maybe I overdid it for the first year here?) I think I might have missed the window on some of the spring crops, but I still don't have a place to put these guys yet. So for now, there's no lettuce, mesclun greens, spinach, or chard, but I'm hoping to just squeeze some in the beds around the house this week until we get our garden built.

I have strawberry plants too, which were delivered bareroot. For nongardeners, that's exactly what it sounds like. Their bed isn't made yet, so they're languishing on the kitchen counter. I hope they survive.

What else am I planting this year? Let's see...butternut squash, acorn squash, zucchini squash, blueberries, raspberries...gosh, I know there are a few other things, but I can't even remember, so I'm going to stop here.

I just want to be rescued.

I suddenly feel the need to redeem myself.

Go here and here and here, and you'll see that I do indeed have a thinking, working brain.

(I've been a busy little writer.)
