| so as i sit here on the labor and delivery floor on a saturday night "serving" my weekend 24 hour ob/gyn call, it gives me some time to reflect on my first rotation. so far today i helped with a vaginal delivery in which the baby's head got stuck (9lb baby!) and the dad almost fainted right there in the room, a circumcision in which the doc accidently sliced a part of the penis(malpractice?!), and a c-section all within 4 hours. This is just a snippet of my rotation so far filled with hysterectomy's, d+c's, laparotomy's, tubal ligations, and the ever so popular pap smears. i realized a few things so far. #1) i have a new found respect for ALL women. their pain threshold is out of this world sometimes. the various stuff they have to go through, from just a regular pap to pregnancy, its amazing how strong they are, if a dude had to do HALF that stuff they would be balling on the floor right now. i guess its one of those things that you have to see to believe. some guys act all macho b/c they can take a hit and not cry, lets see if they cry if they had 9lb baby come out of their peehole or even had to stick a brush in there #2) its always awesome to see a supportive husband right there next to his wife. you could see how strong their love is when the husband takes the news more seriously to heart than his own wife. for example, when we had to tell a 50 yo woman that she had metastatic cervical cancer, the husband was the one asking all the questions with a concerning look or today when the husband and wife saw their new child after the scary situation and started crying together. there were plenty of times when i thought in my head "now thats true love right there." #3) though as much as i love the surgical aspect of ob/gyn, i remember a doc telling me to pick a profession where you think you could do the same thing for 25 years over and over. thats like any job. after seeing a lifetimes worth of pap smears and pelvic exams, i dont think i could do that day after day for 25 years. | | |
| well summer is over. it lasted 2 weeks at least. now tomorrow i get to wake up at 6am to start my ob/gyn rotation. i even get a pager, who even uses pagers these days. i think im going to come to hate that thing very soon. so this pretty much sums up my past summer which consisted of studying 12 hours a day for my boards. it was like the worst job ever except it wasnt the typical 9-5 and there was nobody there to force you to do work or pay you. its even worse when you realize how nice it is outside and you force yourself to sit inside a freezing library bent over books. i usually consider myself good at time management and balancing work and play. but there was just too much to cover. i was literally a walking robot, waking up at 8am, studying till noon, lunch, study till dinner, gym, study all night, sleep, repeat. i dont think i ever studied so much in my life, nor do i plan to again. after my boards, packed my stuff to binghamton, went on wine tour, visited nyc and returned to binghamton. after spending 6 years in syracuse, its very weird not knowing my way around for once. not that bing has much anyways. well now its way past my bedtime of 10pm and tomorrow is my first day. i cant wait until im on call and have to spend my nights at the hospital. lets hope nobody gives birth overnight so i can get my beauty sleep. goodbye summer. tear.

| since my life these days are pretty boring and filled with studying, here is an interesting event that happened last night. so as most of you know i live on the 18th floor of a 24 story apartment building. 5 of us were watching a movie around 1am and we kept on hearing loud banging sounds above my apartment and the balcony door opening and slamming shut constantly. we wondered what was going on but didnt care and kept on watching the 13th warrior. all of a sudden, for some reason something caught my attention to my balcony and i see a womans legs hanging from the ledge above us! all 5 of us look over in shock because this woman is hanging from a 19th story balcony so we all run over as someone or maybe she must have been pulled back up. i have to admit my heart was racing like crazy and we didnt know what to do next, either go downstairs and tell the security, call the police, or go upstairs and see what was going on. since there were 5 dudes we figured we could take them (yea right) so we went upstairs as a young indian doctor comes out of the apartment. she must have been a friend as she said the girl was going through something very troubling and that she was going to get some help and that her friend was being held down in the apartment. so we all went back down and tried to finish the movie but it was really hard not to keep looking over at the balcony. i havent heard anything more about it but thats probably the craziest thing that has happened to me in awhile.
other than that, one more exam monday and my second year is OVER!

| "Medical school syndrome: a form of acute hypochondriasis that affects most people in training to be a physician." If I have learned one thing about my training thus far is that it brings out the hypocondriac in all of us. Its satisfying to know that your once "healthy" self image goes out the window and you start thinking you have every disease in the book. not good. one thing i did learn is that i dont have a BEZOAR! (new favorite word and cant believe that it is actually a medical term) so next time somebody pisses you off you know what to call them.
on the bright side, bahamas in 2 weeks! cant wait to lay out on the beach until my skin turns mongolian and put myself in risk of skin cancer! j/k.
other note, my rents got another puppy, any suggestions for names? its a male btw. some of the suggestions have been: homer, aaron, quagmire, brian, and many more that i cant remember because they were such great ideas.
