  • Dreisbach Preview

Hey folks; I got back from the Biker party at Dreisbach and am still tired... Also, this year I did not bring my own camera, so I have to wait patiently for the pictures my friends took. I already received a few... Feast your eyes on this:

  • Dora

I have a strong bond with an elderly lady where I live. She is my neighbour a few floors down and we get a long very well. I think I can even say that we understood each other as of the first time we met. There is a kind of connection between us that can hardly be described by words: we don't have to say many things. I frequently spend time with her that we do not speak at all, or even then we say very few words. It is nice to have such a bond. To be able to communicate without speech, just a brief glance and we both know what we wanted to express.

Many times I have been asked what the attraction is; how it is that its just her and I that get along so well, where as she pulls her nose up for so many others. I can not say; it is a mystery to me as well. I just know that her warm heart and devoted attention fuels my soul.

I especially like it when she shyly tries to lick my face. She knows she's not supposed to, but tries to anyway, because she feels so strongly about my petting hands. Dora truly is a beautiful, lovely fourteen year old shaferdog. And I bet you were fooled, right until the last paragraph. Got you barking up the wrong tree there, didn't I?

  • Rabbit?

I live in a fairly 'green' area. Luscious trees and green pastures and meadows surround my apartment building, where an abundant wild life lives and plays. As my wife is still sick, and my son has yet to shift back to a normal day-night schedule (thank you, vacation) I walk the dogs in the morning, before I go to work.

Now I already know that there are many bunnies in our area. And I also know they are not very shy; the number of natural predators is low as most dogs are well fed or on leashes and most cats are... well, cats. Lazy to the bone. Why bother chasing a rabbit when personnel provides you with ample nutrition. Now normally, the rabbits I encounter will sit quietly until I am about 10 yards away, after which they scurry and seek a hiding place. 20 to 30 yards if one of the dogs is not on a leash. This morning however, I encountered a pair of rabbits that did not run away. They _did_ move, however. They just did not move from their place until I was about 10 feet away. Only then the pair shot off like an arrow from a crossbow into the thick bushes behind them.

I guess even rabbits are deaf to the world when they procreate.

  • Tip toe, Tip toe

I live in an apartment building with an elevator. A handy invention that allows you to move vertically between floors with little effort. So I use it frequently and leave the stairs where it is, gathering dust. Our family has three dogs and they have to be walked every morning. On a school day, my son has that responsibility and otherwise my wife. My son has holidays at the moment, so he shifted his day-night rhythm by almost a full eight hours and my wife came down yesterday with a severe backache. That left me to lead the hounds of hell towards their morning defecation.

They are fully awake, alert and happy to go out whereas I was at the brink of being awake, but not quite there yet. The four of us stepped in the elevator and I managed to locate and press the ground floor button upon which the vertical movement started. It stopped as well, as scheduled.

Now our apartment is on the third floor. On the first floor, a lovely lady lives with her two dogs Dora and Jerry. Beautiful, loving creatures that resent my dogs intensely, as they do them. She also had planned to take the elevator to walk her dogs. The elevator door opens, and me and my dogs walk out, expecting to be at the ground floor. Alas, we walk right into Dora, Jerry and their owner who start a maniacal barking, joined by my three lovelies. A few human curses thrown in, three quick and frantic grabs and I had my dogs back in the elevator, whereas Dora and Jerry were held close to their owner in the corner of the opposite room. I was fully awake now. As was the entire block.

I returned home without a hitch, and when I walked to the parking garage to fetch my bike, going to work, I came across my neighbour lady. Just one look made us burst in laughter :) One hell of a way to start the early Tuesday morning.

  • Random Kindness Community

It does not exist. Maybe it never will. But I proclaim myself member of the Community for Random Kindness.

It takes very little effort to drop a kind word on a blog that you found today, even if you spend just a minute reading it. When you approach a door, stepping back with a smile to let some one else enter while you keep it open for them costs you about five seconds, including the surprised smile you get in return. Donating some cash (that you would have spent on a beer on a Friday night anyway) to that starving webcomic artist whose archives you've browsed so diligently takes a surprisingly small effort as well. Click, click.

I just want to say; being nice to a random stranger, or someone you know is worth it. It's easy. Give a little without expecting something in return. Knowing you made another human being smile, even if it is just inside, will give you a nice warm, fuzzy feeling. Do a random act of kindness today. Do one every day. Or more per day, if you can manage it. Spread the word, have your friends join the Community for Random Kindness.

It won't solve the problems of the world, but it will help a little.
