Shin splints

Tell me what you know, tell me what you do.

Happy Mother's Day. The boys each made me at least one card. Sean made me three. Steve wrote me a cute poem.

Walk on your heels up and down the room at least once a day to strengthen the fronts of your legs. It's an old stand-by for football players and runners. But for now, RICE - Rest, Rice, Compression, Elevation.

Thanks, dear. Should I switch off from ice to heat at any point? Or just keep it on ice the whole time? The ice feels good, I'm def. not complaining.

Stay with the cool, sort of like rotator cuff treatment.

I also take a towel or strap and wrap it around my foot while I'm sitting with my leg straight in front of me. Use the resistance of holding the ends while trying to point my foot.

ooh ouch! ibuprofen, ice and calf stretches are super important right now but after you're healing, strengthening your shin muscles will help balance things out and prevent it from happening again (also continue lots of calf stretching). for shin strengthening, try walking across a room on your heels, or put a handful of coins in the toes of your socks, sit with your feet dangling and lift your toes up and down. good luck (from a former ballet dancer whose been there too many times!)

For runners it is an indication that you are doing too much too soon - too fast or too far or too long. I have no idea what it means for Derby Girls.

The only thing I know about them is that my daughter gets them and they hurt.  Beyond that, I'm no help.  Good luck.

I haven't had pain from shin splints, but what other commentors have already told you is good, also doing the right exercises. I hope you will get relief soon.

In the exercise class I go to T/Th, we do all sorts of stretching and muscle strengthening exercises, including ones for front of leg. Unforttunately, that is only temporary help for the problem with sciatic nerve on right side.

I'm glad your family made Mother's Day happy for you.

Oh, new photo! Wonderful! I think you look like Ziva on NCIS!

~~Blessings, prayers 'n cheers

Okay, you finally have your purple hair. Is this a new thing? I've always wondered if/when you were going to do it! (You wanted purple hair three years ago, when mine was red!)

Happy belated Mom's Day, m'dear. Hope your pain is gone!

Yeah, I wanted it before that, too. I've wanted it forEVER.

I'd decided to go w/ a bright pink streak when/if I passed rookie bootcamp (which I blog about at tyradurden.com, mostly). I did pass, I am a hardcore roller derby ass-kicking bitch, so...I figured if I couldn't get the pink hair NOW, I'd never have the balls. ;)

My hairdresser was just like "Oh, gawd, Leslea, this is SO you..." I love her.

It's probably due to running on the skates.  Since there's no cushion... like with a running sneaker.  I get them sometimes when my sneakers are old and I run on the sidewalk or pavement for a long time.

I do the ice treatment and ibuprofen thing when it happens.
