lasik

Has anyone out there had it?  My friend got it earlier this year and loves it.  I'm thinking of getting a consultation in the next few weeks and maybe the surgery next year (after the Austin half-marathon)

I'm trying to decide now whether or not I would like to do it.  Annual enrollment at work starts in a few weeks so if I do, I would like to put the money aside in a healthcare spending account.

Pros: No more contacts, timing.
Cons: Big laser in my eye, money, restriction on activity for a few months

Let me know your thoughts!

it wasn't too bad. i had a lot of weird anxieties about it, but then my dad informed me that it's a really simple procedure, much less complicated than the cataract replacement he had to get done =P one thing i didn't expect was the night vision, but i honestly think i had that before and just didn't notice because i had such bad vision and everything was fuzzy at night anyways. i also never got to 20/20 (it's get a lot better in a few weeks, then slightly worse to settle in somewhere), but i can still pass driving tests so i don't mind. i love waking up in the middle of the night and being about to read the alarm clock =)

i know a ton of people have have gotten it. I plan on it.. once I'm done with the dental work that needs money set aside every year. Maybe in '09..

I've always thought I might want it too...although there is something my optometrist told me that scared me a bit...he said that once you get it done they kind of flatten your eye so that if your eyesight continues to get worse after the surgery you have to wear glasses...because contacts can't fit on your eye anymore.. i don't know if its worth the risk of having to wear glasses again for the rest of your life. that's why you do lasik when your eyesight stabilizes..but I'm 27 now and my eyes still haven't stabilized.  However, I have two friends that did it at least 2 years ago and they haven't had any complications.  My parents know people that did it like ten years ago and had major complications but I think technology has definitely improved a lot since then and should not be a problem anymore.  Good luck with the decision!
