I thought it was interesting, the post about Jesus and politics and who He would vote for. Another interesting question provoked by this is are there any other examples (besides Jesus) of believers in the Bible involved in politics? And the answer is, yes, I can think of several who dealt with Kings and Pharoahs, namely Abraham, Isaac, Daniel, and Joseph. Also there were many Jewish kings that we have as examples, such as David. Now you may say these people have nothing to do with the New Testament believers or with us today, but 1 Corinthians 10 clearly says that the Old Testament stories are put there to teach us, and Hebrews has a whole chapter devoted to Old Testament believers who were faithful and are to be emulated.
Daniel and Joseph are two of the most righteous people in the Old Testament, and they ruled as second in the kingdom just under the King(of Babylon) or Pharoah(Egypt). So there is a place for righteous people to be involved in politics, obviously, and leadership.
We had a discussion about Daniel in our Bible Study the other day and I was particularly interested in the question our teacher posed, "What qualities would you look for in a good leader or king?" (We were discussing a very evil one at the time.) It's easier to think of the kind you DON'T want, but these are some of the qualities we listed that you WOULD:
honest
hard working
discerning about people
good administrator
just
merciful
humble
These are just a few. How many politicians do you know who fit this bill?? I think one of the reasons is that the hard working caring , honest people are sickened by the state of politics in general where greed and power seeking and deception are required to even function normally!! So they don't want to run anymore. The teacher was also trying to make the point that the world is set up for, ready for, an antichrist to arise...we wouldn't even see him coming...we are living in the end times, and as Daniel says, we must be strong and stand up for Christ and righteousness even if everyone else isn't...
