  • I've been packing my bag and planning my route for the past month.  I've gone back and forth between packing electronics and gadgets like GPS, ibook, cell phone, ipod, and a digital voice recorder versus taking just a tarp and a pair of sweats.  I really want to learn what it is to suffer and be alone in the wilderness.  Suffering is like lifting weights for the soul.  However, I don't want to die, so I am taking provisions like a weather-rated sleeping bag, tent, hiking shoes, matches, flashlight, etc.  I tried to find a place in between hobo and James Bond 007 without the term hiker, because hiking is what Boy Scouts do, I'm not a Boy Scout. • About 2 years ago, I was a cadet at the United States Military academy, I used to look out over the Hudson river and the surrounding forest and I would wonder what it was like on that side. I would always dream of swimming in the river, hiking the hills, and sleeping under stars. I wondered who I would meet, what they would say, and what we would have in common.

By August 6th, 2003, that urge could not be ignored. I left the academy and took at job directly across the river at Capuchin-Franciscan Youth and Family Ministry. I was part of 6 person team that gave retreats for teenagers. It was a dream. An incredible encounter with community and with Christ.
However, I would still find myself glancing out the window, daydreaming about experiencing God's beautiful Creation.

Well, the best view is from a distance, and that is what I seek. I see myself, my talents, my life, as threads. Threads help to make up an emourmously beautiful tapestry of which everything and everyone is a part.

I am traveling to look upon this tapesty of creation, and find where my threads belong.
