An Unlikely Monarch

Excerpted from Time magazine, May 8, 2006, pages 64–65.

Jigme Singye Wangchuck: The Surprising King of Bhutan
By Pico Iyer

King_Jigme

King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, great-grandson of Bhutan’s first hereditary monarch and once the world’s youngest King (when he came to power in 1972), rules his people more in the spirit of Buddha than of more worldly princes. To this day there is not a traffic light in the Himalayan kingdom, by law everyone must wear traditional 14th century clothing and the number of tourists allowed into the country over the past 10 years is lower than the number of fans who pile into a college football game. Television and the Internet have, it is true, arrived with the 21st century, and a few superluxe hotels are now coming up around Bhutan, but what hits you when you touch down in its only airport is the silence.

Almost 30 years ago, long before “positive psychology” became a boom in the West, King Jigme, now 50, suggested that nations be measured by “gross national happiness”; the rich are not always happy, after all, while the happy generally consider themselves rich. Four months ago, he launched an even more radical idea: self-deposition. To urge his people toward independence, he announced that he would step down two years from now (his son would officially take over) and that his country would hold its first national democratic elections.

King Jigme—who gave up absolute power in 1998 and last year sent every household in the land a new draft constitution that allowed for his impeachment—is setting a quietly revolutionary precedent. If most politicians are inherently suspect because they seem so eager to grab power and so reluctant to surrender it, what does one make of a leader who voluntarily gives up his position, as if placing his people’s needs before his own?

American presidents (present and future) and congresspeople need to read this article.

Hey! Yeah... mud to shades is a big step, but c'est la vie. This article is intruiging- in my Management and Leadership class we have been talking about the difference between power and authority. Power is something given, like a title or position, while authority is something intrinsic, such as the respect people give you for making a fair judgment. I think King Jigme is a fantastic example of someone in power that gained authority, and ruled with that instead of his power.
Hope you have a great day- any updates on school stuff?

Wow, that is really outstanding! We could all learn something from him. Maybe we should read more of the Buddha's teachings, or just plain read them, period. People want to be at peace, but they want rampant progress and personal power and prestige at any cost as well. Can't have both.

I always appreciate the way you glean these fascinating things and offer them up.

I just noticed there are no dates on your posts......????

Thank you very much for your comments on my site.

Very good thoughts!  This guy represents the very best of "servant" leadership in my mind.  A concept that our "christian" leadership seems to have lost long ago.  Have a great day!

HI I GOT A LINK OFF BREAT_OF_DAWN'S SITE AND REALLY LIKED THE ARTICLE.  I THINK BUDDHISTS MAKE GREAT LEADERS.  THEY'RE TAUGHT TO THINK OTHERS BEFORE THEMSELVES, LEAD A MORAL LIFE THAT PROMOTES UNDERSTANDING AND TOLERNCE, THEY'RE AGAINST VIOLENCE FOR ANY REASON, AND ALL FOR HARD WORK.  I MAY BE BIASED THOUGH BECAUSE I PRACTICE BUDDHISM.  AT ANY RATE, GREAT POST.

Thanks all... to Breath_of_Dawn for spotting me, to Nicodemus42 for her allusion to palm trees ('cause that is my own writing and compliments always give one a boost), to HisPrayerWarrior and LizzieMae7 just because, and to CaseyAtBat and SickBody86 for dropping by and leaving their signatures behind.

Oh, and I didn't mean to forget you GreatGrandpaDog: I just wanted to say that I think you'd look ravishing in a skirt, whether at a football game or any other place.

I was rather admiring it as a bathrobe, but surely it cannot be 14th century black spandex legging.

Did you know that in the Restoration era (17th C Britian) that men prided themselves in the calves of their legs and would stuff their stockings to appear to have larger calf muscles, much like some of their female counterparts did with other parts of their bodies? I kid you not. And it seems as though that fabric, whatever it was, had something of a spandex-like quality to it as well. Regarding the above, perhaps it is Asian silk that King Jigme wears under his imperial garments: such would be native to the terrain or at least available close nearby. And it would be smoother than spandex and silkier too.

haha, your comments are cracking me up.

I guess it speaks much about a man's character to be so willing to give up his power.  That's true humility.

How refreshing...how wonderful...how like The Kingdom.
