Is it too late for an intro to my Flicker experience? Maybe, but here we go. Internship experiences can be good or bad... You could end up mailing 1000's of packages, getting coffee, and picking up the dry cleaning for very uncool people... OR you could walk into a chandelier / black light-lit office with poster covered walls, loud music, and AWESOME people. Luckily, I am in the latter half. Okay... there is not always loud music, but it sounds like a place you want to be right? I have been here for over a month and it has been amazing mainly because everyone at Flicker rocks. At first it was a little crazy. For example, the pre-release cd preparation pressure...which can be translated into Ryan and I meticulously cutting paper and positioning labels perfectly onto cds...I promise it was much more serious than you will ever imagine possible...really. These days my fellow intern and I are busy with our myspace market research projects (you know - stalking and taking notes), updating website info and The After Lunch 90's Music Minute. Anyone know the top song of the 90's? FYI: I love Until June. Also, lots of exciting new things are going on right now with Fireflight so keep watching out for updates! Their new album is SO GOOD...Sure, we mail the occasional package, but I have to admit...I think I love it.

A little update to the animal kingdom situation....

This afternoon Carol the property manager sent out an email to the company telling everyone to remove all the food from their offices, as mouse traps are going to be set up around the building. A short time later, we were all relieved when the CEO sent out a response email stating that there is no need for anyone to worry; the snake will probably catch the mouse soon. For those who don't know, there were (possibly still are?) two snakes loose in the building recently. Lucky for us, everyone here has a great sense of humor so the situation has actually become quite entertaining. I just have to remember to watch where I sit...and where I put my feet...

So we work in a swanky office building in the swanky part of town – all SUVs and stay-at-home moms who play tennis and “have lunch” all day. But today our friend Kristol found mouse droppings in her cubical. So Mario set a trap and asked her to alert him if she saw any wagging tales under her feet. And recently Mario had to put snake repellant outside all the entrances because there are SNAKES. IN. THE. BUILDING. You should also know that the Flicker compound is located under the stairs on one side and the elevator control room on the other with no windows to the outside. It’s a dark, cool cavern full of dark corners and dark darkness. If there was ever a place for a snake/mouse/scary spider to hide out – it would be Flicker. I am now officially freaked out.

So today is the beginning of my third week interning at Flicker. Everyone here is really cool, and I feel like I'm getting to know my way around. There was a lot of activity going on around here during my first two weeks...I got to meet Eleventyseven and Fireflight on my first day! A couple days later I also got to meet Wavorly and Flatfoot 56, which was sweet. At the end of that week, there was a party for Provident to celebrate high album sales for the band Casting Crowns...the Vice President of Sales had said he would get his head shaved if the album sold more than a certain number, so we got to watch that too! Last Wednesday, there was an artist showcase at the Global Cafe in downtown Nashville that Fireflight was a part of, so Zach, Josh and I spent most of the day setting up for that. I also went out to lunch last week with Josh and Zach to this place called Blue Coast Burrito...it was definitely the best Mexican food I've ever had. Well I guess that's all for now...I hope the next few weeks will continue to be as exciting!

Here’s my funny story for the day…

I stepped out of my officle (that’s office + cubicle for those that don’t know office language) for a few minutes to ask some questions to a colleague. When I came back and we’re talking like 20 minutes later here, JoAnna says she swiped my Until June CD since we were out. Before she could continue her story she answers her phone. Mystified, I wait. She returns to our conversation only to say that since we were out of Until June discs, she had to give my copy to ZORO! Now instantly, I bet you thought of a masked crusader, robed in black and slashing “Z” in everything possible.But no, you’re wrong. Being the geek drummer that I am I knew who she meant…

For those of you who don’t know who this is, Zoro is a funk/R&B/soul drummer commonly know for grooving with Lenny Kravitz, but he’s also toured and recorded with Bobby Brown, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, The New Edition, Jody Watley, Philip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire, Vanessa Paradis, Sean Lennon, and Lisa Marie Presley—to name only a few. He has made a name for himself amongst the drumming community for his sticking style. He’s very stylish guy as in he stands out in a crowd; rarely do you catch him without a unique hat on. So knowing I missed him, I kinda freaked… I would have loved to talk to the guy in a non-awkward, non-starstuck manner but it didn’t happen. I said “Should I go look for him?” “What should I say when I find him?” Catching him in our suite is one thing but walking up to him to introduce myself seemed way too stalkerish for me...Nevertheless, I went looking. After a little bit, I gave up. With all those thoughts still running through my head, Jo then whispers, “He’s in the lobby!” So I snatched some paperwork and pretended like it was an urgent thing to take to the front desk. As I turned the corner there he sat…waiting. Guess he needed a ride…who knows. I was told he recently moved to Nashville, which makes sense since I saw him during this year’s GMA week and The Doves back in April. All in all, I did find him.

…but I chicken out and just looked over at him. I thought to myself…maybe I’ll just email him. You know, the less confrontational method. Here’s what I’ve go so far…

Dear Zoro-

You recently came to Provident (Sony/BMG) to visit with Jason but I missed you as he gave you the grand tour. I work for Flicker and I am a drummer. I thought since I indirectly gave you my until june cd…uh maybe you could give me some cool drum lessons?

While playing a rousing game of "Would You Rather..." at the Interns last lunch Heiner says, "Would you rather be on a desert island for one year with nothing to eat but what you could find in the wild, or be confined to a McDonald's.....for one solid year". Everyone shouted "ISLAND" in unison, everyone except for Kenny the Intern. After a few moments of silence Kenny said, "Hmmm……does the McDonald's have a PlayLand?"

Awesome.

Farewell Flicker

What exactly are the rules for picking a BFF? For all the older generation reading this, BFF stands for Best Friends Forever. Are you allowed to have a group of people as your BFF? Well, I don’t really care about the rules; I have decided that the Flicker Team is officially my new Best Friend. Oh the memories. BEFORE YOU CONTINE, OPEN THIS LINK AND READ THIS BLOG WITH THE AUDIO FROM THIS LINK PLAYING. This is the part of the blog when you have to fight that feeling in your throat where you are trying to hold in all of your feelings, memories and eventually tears. This summer has been one for the books. It has been long, but only feeling like a few days. I have learned a lot. Things like: how a record label functions, marketing strategies, and what food makes your nose bleed. All important subjects I promise you. I would like to dedicate the next few words to my dear Flicker friends.

Cortni- my fellow intern, you are one of the coolest girls in the world. Thanks for helping me with my NGS (nice guy syndrome), I think you made me a little less nice. We are long lost siblings that have finally reunited. I had such a great time with you this summer and I am going to miss you dearly. We will reunite and take over the world soon enough.

Josh- What up bra, bra, bra, bra, bra, bra? ( For the older generation, this means, what is up with you my brother?) I am going to miss you and the Chandy bro. You are the man and I look up to you in many ways. Thanks for always being there for me and showing me the ropes. You are one of my best friends. Get to shore!

JoAnna- I freaking love you, but not in a romantic way, remember that. I will never look at your computer again; it was only out of habit. I will miss our good morning high-fives. Thanks for all that you do, you are amazing. You do a lot for the label and it is appreciated.

Zach- I will miss our cheap lunches at McDonalds and my Photoshop training. You are a great friend. Crazy? Yes, but a great friend. Keep me up to date with Kansas and Indiana.

Troy- After you babysat my truck for a whole summer, I knew we would be close. You are the man and a great friend of mine. Call me if your sub or TV stops working again. If not, I’ll see you soon.

Heather JK, Mark & Eliza- You are all INCREDIBLE. What an amazing/ dirty week we had. I will never forget it. I still laugh to the point of tears when I hear the Until June remix that we made. Or when I sing Hello Darlin by Conway Twitty. Heather, I still can't believe we missed the bypass on the way up there. You all mean so much to me, friends for life.

There are many more to name from PLG, but I don’t want to leave anyone out. But, I love you all; you mean the world to me, seriously!

Intern Cortni here. My summer at Flicker is coming to a close, and I guess you could say I’m a bit emotional. I’m sad to leave Nashville and go back to Kansas City, but I’ll be glad to see my friends and family. I am so happy that I have had this opportunity. I have learned so much about so many areas of the music industry: marketing, sales, radio, A&R, and my personal favorite----MAIL! I’m pretty much a pro at that one. I’ve listened to some demos, learned how to use SoundScan, gone to some really great meetings, met some amazing people, and basically fallen in love with Nashville…AND the people I work with. To give you a taste of who I’ve had to deal with this summer, I am going to tell you a few things that I love about them.

Kenny, my co-intern: Oh, Kenny. Let me tell you….this guy is fabulous. He’s so gentle, it’s hardcore. My favorite thing about Kenny is probably that we have a secret song….and that he got me to love Cartel.
JoAnna, my boss: First off, she is great at what she does. She always seems so collected and focused…I don’t know how she does it. The best thing about JoAnna, though, is when she tells us random facts from her office. “Did you know that Oprah makes 230 million dollars!? Just from her show!” OR the fact that she loves LOST and the Office…..yessss!
Troy, VP Marketing: He’s so fantastic….I think he’s a high school cheerleader stuck in a man’s body. I don’t mean that in a bad way….he’s just always really cheerful and fun…..and he chews gum…a lot. He also goes out of his way to make sure that Kenny and I are included in some really cool projects.
Zach, New Media: His last name is Morris…no lie. And he LOVES the ladies.
Heiner, A&R: The best thing about Heiner is his brain….I think he’s insane….either that, or brilliant. I haven’t figured it out yet, and I’m not sure I ever will.
Heather, A&R: She is me….for real.
Brian P., Interactive Marketing: He keeps a jar of peanuts on his desk…..”For when I get hungry…” And then he does some really rad tricks with the jar….except when he drops it…then he looks lame, but whatever.
Kristin, Interactive Marketing: Uh…..she’s from KANSAS!!! OP represent!
Kristol, Marketing: What I love about Kristol is that she calls me pretty and she always apologizes before asking Kenny and I to help her with something. She is ridiculously sweet.
Brian D., National Promotions: This guy is super funny. Really sarcastic, but he gets to the point….I like that.
Chris Chicago, Promotions: He calls me GUNZ…….awesome! And he came with a bunch of us to Transformers, the greatest movie I’ve seen in a long time.
Emily, Interactive Marketing intern: She gets SO excited about music….it is so funny. When a good part of a song comes on, she turns it up, makes everyone be silent, and she conducts the music with her hands. It’s quite entertaining.
Kellyn, Interactive Marketing intern: She is a fellow soccer fan, and we have really similar tastes in music. She’s also my gossip buddy…..good gossip, don’t worry.

Well, that’s about everybody. I hope you all enjoyed this peek into the world of a Flicker intern, and I will miss you all greatly. Thanks for supporting Flicker Records and our artists, and keep doing what you do! See ya!
