A great Saturday morning show... for Deaf Kids

DrWondersWorkshop We tend to TiVo interesting shows... even Saturday morning entertainment.   Recently I stumbled across a show called "Dr Wonder's Workshop".  It's a show on Christian TV that is geared toward kids.  All actors are communicate with sign language, and voices are overdubbed for the hearing audience.  It's a beautiful sight!  In getting ready to be a daddy I was reading a book called "Baby Minds", which is from the same authors as drwonder1"Baby Signs".  One of the things the book talks about is how you can help your child develop communication skills earlier by working with them on simple sign language.

How great, then to see that there are TV shows that nurture the same skills, and in such a God-honoring way!!

Neverending project

One project I have been working on for too many weekends now is my daughter's toddler bed.  My wife bought it on CraigsList for a good price, and it was in pretty good condition.

She then asked me to work on refinishing the bed because of a few dings and marks in the varnish.

So I bought some stripper chemicals that turned out to be worthless... spent hours laying on coats of the stuff and then making a futile effort to remove the varnish and stain.  A couple weekends later I would give in and start sanding.  It's probably been a month now and I have the pieces sanded and washed, hopefully ready for a nice couple layers of stain and then a urethane finish.

In the picture is the beginning of our effort to prepare the li'l kiddo for the move to a toddler bed.  The mattress in the corner sits where her crib normally is, and the crib is temporarily relegated to blocking the bookshelf and closet.  The changing table and play kitchen are both MOPS Sale finds.

Since the bed is not ready yet we just put its mattress on the floor for yesterday's nap, last night's sleep and on into today.  She is finally starting to accept and appreciate the new (temporary) setup.  She has plenty of liberty to run about the room and then hop on her pillow and mattress and then fly back around the room.

You'll notice her two pigtails.  It used to be we would do one pigtail in the middle on top of her head, but then that evolved to two, and now we fairly regularly have it up in three pigtails across the top.  Mommy curls them nicely into big round arcs.  This girl's not had a significant haircut yet since birth... only the trim needed for the baby book.  So now my wife is ready to take her to get her bangs professionally trimmed.  I have a hard time swallowing that she isn't comfortable having me do the trim rather than paying hard-earned money to have somebody else do it.

I'll try to get over my ego and just see what the hairstylist does to my baby's hair.

Where were you one year ago today?

I prefer thinking about where I was TEN years ago today.  I had just finished my 4th year at my first college and was working for peanuts at a summer job.  I had started volunteering as a musician for an inner-city church.  White guy leading a 50% black, 30% hispanic, 20% other church from an acoustic guitar.  Felt a little out of place, but I knew that the best thing you can do with your talents is offer them to the Lord.  I woulda rather been playing bass in the band, but when you have no lead musicians you do what you gotta do.  If y'all remember James Boyd, it was his church just NE of downtown Portland.

Little did I know that in just a few months I would meet a nice gal who would become a friend... later a girlfriend... later a fiancee... later a wife.  It would be a year with transition, adventure, stress, and some depressing times, too.  That year was certainly a life milestone for me.

When you first got the internet, what was the first website you visited?

When I first got online (ever) I think I first visited Yahoo.com.  It was the only search engine I was aware of at the time (year was somewhere around 1996).  Since then the world has changed tons.  Now my search engine is google, and there are so many good places to go online.

Sure, there are places also NOT to go, but there are many good places.

And to find unique places I find StumbleUpon.com works best.

If you could only be remembered with one word, what word would it be?

Kind
