Where have I been?  To make a long story short, we're no longer in Thailand.

I took a job teaching inner city high school students in Milwaukee, WI.  Returned to the U.S. and bummed around with relatives until August 10, when we closed on our new house and moved in.  School started on the 22nd, which gives you an idea how much time there was to prepare.

I teach six 45-minute periods in the day, and lunch is with the kids.  There's not a minute in the day to even catch my breath until 1:30.  Literally.  No breath catching, though, because even though I have a couple periods free, I still have the seniors at 3:05.  Too many in the room, too many who are going nowhere and know it, and too many who have "won" battles with too many teachers in the past -- teachers in other schools, and this one, who have quit teaching because of this class (among other things) that has gone from 120 when they were freshmen to 37 now.

What keeps me going?  I've got to feed my family and ... in every class there are students who are, or could be, going someplace if their peers would get out of their way.  I connect with some of them every lesson, but not long enough, not often enough, not yet, anyway.

Last week was the first full week of school.  I leave home at 6am, get home at 6 or 7pm, crash, get awakened by Jane or Mary for supper, crash, and get awakened to go to bed.

I don't think I'll get any cheese and crackers with the whine.

Well, it certainly is good to see you again.    Sounds like you have your hands full.

Perhaps not, but since the weekend is approaching, you may want to change that whine for a bottle (case?) of Jacob's Creek. Relax and unwind a bit.

Glad we had a chance to talk. I was really worried.

Thanks for being a teacher who is still willing to care about the students.  We need many more like you!  (And you're in my old stomping grounds -- I was born and raised in Racine, just a bit south of you.)

Apathy seems to have taken over the majority of the youth nowadays but it's nice to know people still attempt to get through.  One of my best friends' husbands is principal for an elementary school in Phx and it saddens me to listen to some of his stories of the children that are so young and just don't care, but he does it day in and day out because he has to try.

I'll listen Jim.  From September to June, my life is about lesson prep, marking and teaching, and all that goes with it.  The rest of the time I try to be mom and wife.  And when anyone makes  a snotty remark about having summers off I slap them LOL.

I work with those same kids in my facility, after they get into enough trouble to get tossed into jail... so I totally know where you're coming from.

Keep at it.  Those connections may be stronger than you think.  Seeing a flicker and fanning it into a flame of hope... and these are the kids that need hope the most, eh?  Best of luck to you... and to them!

DANG, I can't say it better then Kit did...she beat me to the punch. Just don't become one of thos apathetic teachers...no matter how hard it hurts, teach with your heart and soul. If it's any consolation, I would be taking a nap every day when I got home too, except for the kids having other ideas.

Oh yeah, and have an alcoholic beverage or two on the weekends. If you lived closer, I'd offer DH's master of the margarita services.

I was thankful for the teachers that persisted with me. Despite the fact that I felt that I was genuinely a piece of dirt.

People tell me all the time it takes a special person to do my job, I think that teachers have nurses beat any day.  Open up to your friends and decompress.  ~Be sure to pour a measure or two of Maker's Mark.
