| Who are we fighting for? One of the things Jesus came to do was to rid the Israelites worship of their religious customs, traditions, legalism, and all the other filth that made worship impure. One of the stories in the bible that comes to mind when I think of this, is when a couple of Pharisee’s tried to trick Jesus into breaking the law when they asked him if it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not. And Jesus responded Luke 20:25 render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." As a Christian it really drives me insane when I listen to Christian radio stations where they constantly promote republicanism. (And these Christian republicans really drive me crazy when they go on and on trying to somehow relate the bible to our right to bear arms.) To me, this is the same kind of the thing as people who make a big deal over creationism. Today you find most of the current events relating to Christianity has to do with being republican, being a patriot, God bless America, politics, creationism, not watching rated R movies and so forth. One of the problems of Christianity today, is that it often oversteps its boundaries, which is why we have the separation of the church and state. Christianity is meant to be pure. And that is what Jesus is saying when he tells the Pharisee’s off. As for me personally, politically I am a pro-torturing, anti-abortion, environmentalist democrat. I also really do not think God has a favorite political party nor does he have a favorite country. My point is that a lot of things are really not essential to the faith as people make it to be. Of course there are some things that are concrete in the bible such as preciousness of life, God’s purpose for man to be with woman in a monogamous relationship, social justice and so forth. But as far as these other things, they are far more relevant to Christian culture rather than Christ, and that is something I think that can put people in a closer position to the Pharisees. One last example, is the Christianity vs. Science. Is it evolution or creationism? My personal opinion is that when it comes to science, you should let good science be the standard. Heck, God created science, and as Christians we can believe in both. But as a Christian, it is not essential that we believe in creationism or stress out about it, just as it is not essential for the earth to be the center of the universe and have everything orbit around it. All that is essential as a Christian, is that we worship God purely. As for the rest, just give to Caesar’s what is his, and let us continue to do the things that really matter. As Christians there are many things to fight for, but we must pick and choose our battles wisely. |
