| | SHE SAID YES :)
It happened last night on Polo beach in Maui. I knew that Ann and Chuck were coming Tuesday (today) and that after that we would be boating with Becker, Jessica Claire and David Hessemer Wednesday Morning. So we would have only the first night alone, and I was really nervous having this ring in my computer bag for two weeks. I honestly tried valiently to live my life alone, thinking that it would prevent me from being hurt. Even after we fell for each other, my independence and love of solitude was something I tried really hard to protect. When I went to Europe for 10 days this last time, it was different. I was miserable being apart from her, so when I returned to the States, that's when I decided to get the ring. I found a very very hard to find stone (It's a 6 carat radiant cut - a new type of cut that gives you the brilliance of a round stone cut in a square shape - it's unreal) from my jeweler friend in NYC, and I had to buy it by phone description and e-mails, but I trust my jeweler. Because it got here one day late, I had to reschedule my flight so I could take it to the appraiser and then take the appraisal to my insurance agent. I had it the whole time I was in Ohio and Seattle with her, and I was freaked out about that. I wanted to wait for Hawaii because we celebrated her birthday here last year and it was an unforgettable time.
I get to Ohio, and she keeps saying that she knows me better than I know me, and so I figure if she knows me so well, she knows I'm gonna ask in Hawaii. Anyway, so I'm sitting in the movie theater with her sister Jen and Mel is to my right and Jen says, "Can I see the ring?". I'm like WHAT THE SHIT how does she know??? The only people in the whole world who knew were: Jessica Strickland (she helped me since she knew what Mel likes) Kristen Alexander, my dad, Amy and Janey, Brian (he had to pick up the ring box in Ohio) and Nicole. Well Nicole went and told my other assistant Erin, who told my soon-to-maybe-be brother in law Josh, who then told Mel's sister Jen. So I'm like - ah shit, Jen knows now everybody knows. So we get to Hawaii and Mel is completely beat after the five and a half hour flight and in a cranky mood so I'm going - GREAT. I wanted to have a nice dinner outdoors, and she wanted room service - then she like - goes to hit the sack! and I said - NO! Let's go for a walk on the beach!!! So she says, ok let's get all dressed up. (at this point I knew she knew because she would for SURE make me dress up to get engaged so I was sure she knew). So, we go to the beach, it's at night, it's beautiful, there's a beautiful crescent moon, the stars, and the roar of the surf, and we sit down at two lounge chairs watching the surf roll up to our ankles. I'm like - this would be beautiful and romantic if it wasn't such a silly charade. I mean she knows that I know that she knows that I know, so I turned to her and say, "so, ya wanna see the ring?". She says, "what ring?" I'm like haha. Shut up.
I said - you know, the ENGAGEMENT ring! She said - shut up, you are joking where is it? In your hat? and i said yes, and of course it wasn't there so she was totally confused. So then I pulled it out of my left pocket, and gave it to her. She said, "IS THIS A JOKE?" like ten times over and over again. At that point I was like, oh oh, she didn't know. So I put the ring on her finger, and I started to tear up, and I said, "we're engaged!" She said, ummmm aren't you going to ask me first? LOL. So I got on one knee, and asked her and she yells out - who else knows? LOL! So I said, are you going to answer? It was hilarious and so typical of how we do things. Atypical.
Anyway, I asked her dad, and he gave his blessings. We are officially engaged with a very small wedding planned in late August next year at my new horse ranch, "http://www.bluemoonranch.com" |
