  • What's the best '80s band of all time - or, at least, of that decade?

    Music has a magical way of transporting you back to the moment you first heard the song in question. The problem today is that even my favorite artist are having problems doing something new and revolutionary. Usually, they just do variations of the "sound" that made them famous and that's only when they get a chance to be heard commercially at all. The music industry today is plagued by there success. Only major five companies control everything you hear on the radio and if you are an artist and not signed by one of them your SOL.

    What's worse is the crap that passes for art these days. In the last twenty years I've only heard maybe a dozen songs that I consider worthy of my attention. Here's an example of what I don't like. Rap. (Rhymes with CRAP) It is nothing but a collection of nasty negative rage lyrics set to a monotonous beat and delivered in a rhyming style befitting a four year old. It's noise, not music. Grunge: A total lack of musical ability and cohesive thought unfortunately married to over torqued amplifiers. What to write a song in that style? Here's an example of how easy it is;

    "I woke up this morning...Woke up this morning...But the new day was almost over, My head was on fire...I had no desire...Because I was almost sober; (guitar spike followed by 20 measures of muddy notes...) (Here's the chorus) "I'm stupid...I'm worthless...Please kill me! Yeah, Ain't got nothin' left within me...I'm stupid...I'm worthless...Please kill me...Yeah, stupid, worthless - KILL ME!

    Get the ideal?

    But to answer the question: Van Halen. But I also enjoyed several singles by individual artists and groups like Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Ah ha (Take On Me), Supertramp, Chicago, Wamm (Careless Whispers), Billy Ocean, Journey and Roy Orbison among others.

    I just answered this Featured Question, you can answer it too!

    Sounds to me that you just need to expand your horizons. One of the most wonderful things about the internet is the access it gives you to various forms of media, my personal favorite being music. I do agree that most anything you hear on the radio these days is unoriginal or uninspired, but there is beautiful contemporary music being created by various artists any day of the week. The problem is that you have to look to find it.
