| So yea, I hope nobody has to go through the atrocity that is physical therapy. It hurt. On another note, I've been running constantly since June 2003. I know I haven't posted in a while cuz, well, there are better things to do. On another note, I'm 21 as of Wednesday!!! Woo hoo. I will require the help of everyone to not let me pass out in some random place. Bye. | | |
| Today was a very interesting day. Apart from all the exercises, which make me hurt a lot, I got to see my wound. That's right, I changed my bandages today and it didn't look as horrible as i thought. There is like a four inch cut right above my shin as well as two holes on the top of my knee. The cuts did look really weird because there is no leg hair there. I'm supposed to start the real physical therapy either Friday or Monday. Man, I wish this would end, and it hasn't even started yet. Oh well, pain is to come. Until later. | | |
| Well, today begins part of my therapy. I have just three exercises so far. One is to lift my left leg with the brace on ten times, three times a day. The second is to have the brace off and put a rolled up towel underneath my knee. I have to flex it straight against the towel for ten seconds, ten times, three times a day. The last exercise is to sit in a chair, with the brace off again and lift my left leg with my right until i can't go no more. I then flex the other way, only using my right leg. I do this one 10 times, 15 times a day. The knee is very sore, but no significant pain. | | |
| This post is to clarify the actual procedure. There were three types of anasthesia put in my body. The first was the mild sedative to make me not feel the second. The second was put through a catheter in my spine to numb everything from the waist down. The final injection was put in my femur. This was optional as the only purpose was to help my body react better after the surgery. For 12 hours my left leg was to stay numb, otherwise, I could have gotten sick and very nauseous after surgery.
The acutal slicing and dicing went very smoothly. The surgeon first did away with my damaged acl. Then he took a piece of my patella tendon and used that as the new acl. Some bone was also taken from my actual patella to secure the new acl. This only lasted about 2 hours. | | |
| Well, today was the big day. After finding out last night that I had to be in the city by 7 am, I came home last night. Well, here goes my day:
I get to the hospital on time and after waiting they take me in. I change and everything and they take me to the back. A bunch of doctors come in and examine my knee, just to make sure. Also they asked which knee it was like 500 times, which was very assuring. Then a nurse proceeded to shave my left knee, don't worry, won't happen again. After filling out forms and getting the iv in my arm, I waited. By 8 am, I was ready to go in. I get on this nice heated bed with lots of blankets, it was really cold otherwise. After, the anasthesiologist tells me he will put the mild sedative in, then I went to sleep. When I woke up, I saw a big green curtain and the anasthesiologist says they're almost done, so I went back to sleep. When I woke up again, I was in recovery with a huge brace on my knee, no feeling in either leg and very very tired. After a while, I started to get feeling back in my legs. Then they fed me at like 12 pm, 12 hours since I ate. After, they took out my catheter in my spine, which I don't remember being put in, which was good. Then the physical therapist showed me all the exercises to do at home and taught me how to walk on crutches, even up and down stairs. Finally, I was dressed and ready to go home. I've been sleeping all day, and still tired. As for now I'm taking painkillers every 4 hours, which are helping. I haven't felt any pain yet and I don't want to start. Well, that was my day.
