A lot of people seem to start their blog entries with song lyrics, so here goes nothin:
as soon as you're born you start dying
so you'd might as well have a good time
aawww no!
sheep go to heaven
goats go to hell
sheep go to heaven
goats go to hell
Cake - Sheep go to Heaven
Those are lyrics from a Cake song that I was reminded of tonight. I picked up a guy walking on the side of I94 at 1am. He was out of gas and had already walked to 9th street, found no help, and was now walking to Mattawan where he knew someone that worked at speedway that would help him, and if they were'nt there he was just going to walk home. In flip-flops. On the ride he told me that three cops had passed right by without stopping, even though its ILLEGAL to walk on the freeway. Which means not only did they not care to stop and see if he was okay or needed help, but they didn't even care that he was breaking a law that was made to keep him from getting hit or killed. So much for protect and serve. When I got home I looked up the "I was a stranger and you took me in" verse. Jesus says there in Matthew 25:31-46 what could easily be misinterpreted as "sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell." We know that he was talking about judgement day and that by "everlasting life" he meant on the new earth but it reminded me of the song nonetheless. I always thought that when the lead singer says stuff like "aww yeah, ooohhh noooo" it was just some random trademark but if you take the "aaww no" as him actually refuting his previous statement the song becomes a lot more true in that "you'd might as well have a good time" is a dangerous attitude. It's a twist of the song, but it got me thinking.
