| Today I'm really thankful because I got to speak in another language all day, and because there's a big purry cat sitting on my lap. And I got to sit with one of my favorite kids at the center for awhile and talk about our families. Apparently, Bangui is out of Coke and Butter, and humerouly, we are all more addicted to at least the coke than I realized! After I wrote that last post about how I was dependant on my computer, on the way back from the office, my computer lid snapped and Tim said I can't open it or close it without shoving something into the fan or something, making my laptop an instant desktop. sigh! I love these kids so much. Oh, and I started reading the Koran last night. And I've also been reading all those light books I rolled my eyes at when I worked at the bookstore! | | |
| Power Cuts12-2am, 5-8:30am, 11:30-4pm, 6-8:30pm, 9:30-10:30pm Those are the hours from midnight to midnight yesterday that we did not have power. I know it’s all part of the adventure!: getting ready by flashlight and taking a shower at night by flashlight. It sure makes life more interesting (frustrating and rather warm) sometimes though! We have a generator, but its way too expensive to run all those hours. We turn it on for a couple hours every night when the power goes off at either 5:30 or 8, or in the day for about two hours at a time if someone is doing laundry, etc. It’s crazy how dependant we are on power though! Computers (my good battery died in transit to Africa), fans, printers, coffeepots, microwaves, lights, chargers, fridges, eventually water, etc. And its crazy how dependant we, I am at least, on my computer! My organization, entertainment, work, correspondence, all on a little box that requires currant! On a larger note: its really hard for people to pull out of poverty if water and electricity are never a given, are often absent. And no one has a good solution that doesn’t require a massive influx of money without resigning la liberté of autonomy. edit: ha, 8:30, not 8:80! | | |

| My little brother was crowned prom king last night! He told me a 40 minute story leading up to the crowning, I mean all the details down to what the girl he was escorting wrote in her bio. And then he said casually, "Ya, so this guy in the back yelled, 'Ben Courter' and the lady was like 'ya', so then later I said to Hillary . . .". I was like, "Ben, I missed something! The lady said 'ya', what??" I'm so happy for him! I wasn't cool in high school (ever). But it was my own fault for being so self-conscious! It just cracks me up how different I was from how my siblings are, but we're still Courters. My little brother is so sweet and cute and authletic and his faith his real and he's nice to people. Sounds like a good prom king to me! Aw, I can't believe my little brother is all grown up, going into the Marines in a few months, jumping over poles or with poles or something, and prom king! I love my family. Well, at the moment, my brother set down the headset because my sister and her boyfriend caught a snake and he wants to go see it before they leave. La la la. ha. I love my family. | | |
