  • Over The Hurdle...

My birding station has been really bustling this spring season. It's better than an aquarium for creating a peaceful, serene mood. I have two sets of bright orange, white and black Orioles that feed on the nectar that I put in the hummingbird feeder. The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds haven't arrived yet, so it's exclusively the Orioles feeding station at the present. A whole flock of jet black Starlings, Crows and Cowbirds have taken over the ground-feeding, whereas in the winter months it was the gentle Mourning Doves and light blue-grey Titmouses place to eat the fallen seeds and peanuts from the hanging seeders. The bossy Blue Jays are a magnificent blue colored contrast to all the light brown and tan species of song sparrows that sing from the pink flowering branches on the tree. The gazebo feeder calls to the brilliant red Cardinals and a myriad of other small birds like the cobalt jewel blue of the Indigo Bunting, the bright maroon-purple of the House Finch and the gleaming Yellow of the Goldfinch males. Gorgeous! There are two species of woodpecker that thrive on the peanut butter suet that hangs from either side of the tree year-round. The smaller species named Downy Woodpeckers are black and white-striped and speckled with red streaks on the males heads. The larger species of woodpecker are called Northern Flickers. I can't forget the Catbirds that trick me into thinking that I have a stray cat out in the yard somewhere...hehehe. Then come the Ravens. Absolutely wonderful birds. I throw them some table scraps here and there and they repay me by guarding my yard from the Raptors that circle endlessly above the feeding station trying for an easy meal. Let me not forget to mention my faithful friends, the Black-capped Chickadees, whom are so tame that they sit right next to me and sing in my ear while I'm filling the feeders each day. With all the songs I hear from these wonderful creatures each day I cannot help but smile and feel the peace that they bring to our little piece of this vast universe.

  • Ahhh Sweet Springtime!

Everything is so lush and green around me. The flowering trees are all different shades and hues of pink and magenta. The bluebells are all blossoming throughout the woods alongside the creamy trilliums and narcissus. The air scented with the white, lavender and deep purple lilacs is intoxicating to say the least. Fresh cut plush lawns fill the breeze with their familiar spring flair. The creek is rolling along with the new rain that sprinkled down earlier this fine day, before the great glowing orb in the sky popped out to dry the sparkling droplets that had accumulated on the long blades of grass that were left swaying in the warm breeze. The birds that are flying in to the feeding station all have their best-dressed spring colors on now that the long, harsh winter has succumbed to the new season. Ahhh, sweet, sweet spring!
