Hada (b.1955), the owner of a Mongolian bookstore in Hohhot, was one of the founders of the underground periodical Voice of Southern Mongolia. Hada was formally arrested on March 9, 1996, for publishing that periodical and for founding the Southern Mongolian Democracy Alliance, which is considered by the Chinese authorities to be a threat to the state. On November 11, 1996, after being convicted of the crimes of separatism and espionage, Hada was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, followed by four years' deprivation of political rights. Hada is currently held at the Inner-Mongolian Autonomous Region Prison No. 4 and is due for release in 2010. He is reported to be in extremely poor health and routinely subjected to torture and ill-treatment. More at www.ir2008.org
