  • How to deal with the heat

In the classroom which, after two days of cooling, they were finally able to bring the temperature down to 27 C. With two computers running and over thirty bodies heating the room, the temperature bounced back quickly into the 30s.

    Student: "It's like a sauna"

Professor: "I really hate those things... But think of it this way: What you gain in insight you loose in weight."

I've been locked in my room for almost 5 hours... and only have ONE paragraph to show for it!! Don't let anyone ever tell you that writing research papers gets easier. ON THE CONTRARY! I never want to have to write a thesis... if I can help it.

  • Weekend in the Schwarzwald

Saturday night I slept out under the stars in the Black Forest with some friends. The night was cool but I was warm and cozy in my sleeping bag, lying on the grass. At first it was difficult to fall asleep because the stars were so bright. As I layed there I listened to the cow bells klanging from a nearby field until I finally drifted to sleep. The next morning we arose bright and early and picked wild blueberries for our pancakes.

Later we took a hike to the peak of the highest mountain in the Black Forest and had a real picknick at the top. We spread out the blankets and food in the middle of the field and feasted on chicken and potato salad. We sat in the middle of the tall grass and flowers and had a wonderful view of the distant rolling hills of the Black Forest and the villages in its valleys. A sound of a church bell in a nearby village resonated through the landscape. The entire scene was like something in a dream. I sat quietly listening to the conversations and absorbing the scene.

  • Now I know why the universities in the USA don't have a mandatory Summer Semester. One just can't think when it's 32 C! And then on top of that most classrooms at the university here don't have air conditioning. After my second class today I just dropped into the couch outside the classroom and slept for an hour. I considered going to the cathedral to study (the coolest place in Freiburg) or climbing into the silver mines. On days like today I'm thankful that my bedroom is in the cellar.
