Time for my once a year update.

I think I've finally figured out what I want to do with my time. It's getting more definite...

Major update (not long).

Went to Colorado. Went to France (Paris and Normandy). Back.

Met someone awesome! ;)

So, I disappered for the weekend, and made a road trip up to Northern California.

I've spent the majority of the time hanging out with Eric (we last spent time doing stuff this past summer...most of the summer actually, to the tune of seven weeks) at his place next to the SF Conservatory of Music. I watched a few rehearsals of the ensembles here (they're all gearing up for a "farewell concert" as the entire school is moving to a new campus at the SF Civic Center in the fall). There is definitely a level of quality in the focus and skills of the students that I've met here that I wish I found back home. :/

Friday night I was lucky enough to get a free ticket to see the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in Davies Symphony Hall. They performed a number of works, but what really stood out was Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with a combination of three bay area choirs. The orchestra had some pitch issues, but considering they tuned to A=415, and played on period accurate instruments (valveless horns/trumpets, boxwood clarinets, wood flutes, gut strings) they made up for it with wonderful tone and expression. The gentleman who sat next to me (in the box seat I somehow procured) regaled me with stories of his experience singing the 9th as part of the Harvard Glee Club and some of the most prominent orchestras in the US half a century ago. Apparently, he also heard the work the first time while a student in Germany, with the Berlin Philharmonic and Furtwangler at the helm.

I swung by Berkeley this evening to say hi to Kim...it's been a number of years now since my sister was in school there. Not much has changed. :) The dorms are still definitely as "rustic" as they've always been. Amusing was a sign on one of the bathrooms on her floor that essentially read "Ladies (and Gents)...when you fornicate, please use your OWN bathroom!). Ya, I don't miss college all that much. :P Came back to SF after fighting through traffic and sight-read with the conservatory kids...they play really well!

Tomorrow it's off to hear a rehearsal of the Bloch Concerto Grosso in the morning (he was head the conservatory here like forever ago), a quick run into Chinatown to return an outfit I shouldn't have bought :P, off to Stanford to say hi to Chrysanthe, then back home...and work on Monday.

It's been a good spring break.

I did it.

Am now playing on a fantastic bow.  Emile Ouchard.

If you don't know what that means, look it up. :P
