Dear Colleagues, Students and Alumni,
Campus Master Planning: Appointment of Consultant
The Steering Committee on Campus Master Planning is pleased to announce that after careful deliberation, the University has decided to appoint Aedas Limited and its overseas partner Edward Cullinan Architects (UK) as the professional consultants to undertake the University's Campus Master Planning (CMP). This is a decision to appoint a team to work with the University community in the process of developing a strategic and visionary master plan, not to choose a fixed design. We believe that the master planning of a sustainable campus relies on the concerted efforts and contribution of all University members, past, present and future.
The appointment of Aedas/Edward Cullinan has been made after assessing the preliminary proposals as evidence of each team's approach and capability, presented by four shortlisted consultants, with strict adherence to a set of criteria as well as the consultants' dedication and strength, innovativeness, practicality, and attention to issues of sustainability, heritage preservation, environmental conservation, pedestrian and vehicular traffic, landscape and building approach. The selected Consultant will be required to begin their work by considering the major concerns of the stakeholders that emerged from a series of presentation sessions, consultation forums and meetings between the Steering Committee and the University community since September 2007.
Aedas is the fourth largest architectural practice in the world and poses a strong presence in the education sector. It has carried out design works for, among others, The University of Birmingham in the UK and Columbia University, Dillard University and Vanderbilt University in the US. Edward Cullinan, the 2008 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Gold Medalist, is well known for his inquisitiveness and inventiveness. His firm has taken part in many world-class projects and the campus planning for Singapore Management University. It has a reputation for designing carefully composed projects with a continuing focus on energy conservation and sustainability.
The Steering Committee has been impressed with the team's creativity and practicality as demonstrated in their preliminary proposal, understanding of the University and remarkable performance in the consultation activities. They have given due recognition to the University Mall as the centerpiece of the CUHK campus and at the same time respected our tradition and unique college system. Their identification with our ideal of a sustainable campus is another crucial factor leading to the recommendation of the Steering Committee.
The CMP, which places campus development within the context of a unified vision to which both University members and external experts can contribute, will not be a fixed design but would serve as a living and developing reference for the University's campus development in the coming decades. The selected Consultant will be given sufficient time to fully comprehend the concerns and detailed requirements of different stakeholders and to make the necessary adjustments and refinement so as to ensure that the University community at large will have the ownership of the CMP. The CMP is expected to be formulated towards the end of 2008.
