It's Been a While

Wow, it's really been a long time since I've posted here. I guess Facebook has consumed most of my online community time, as well as that of most of the people I used to communicate with on Xanga. Ah well.

Almost 2 months ago, my computer died, and I lost all my data -- including almost 4 years worth of pictures. I lost a lot, but I was relieved when I realized a lot of it had been saved because I had posted it on Xanga. Looking back through these images and the comments made by people...it made feel really nostalgic. Some of the things only happened one year ago, but it feels like it was 4 or 5 years ago. I guess so much has happened.

Looking forward to what the future brings...still waiting on JET to tell me where my new placement in Fukui will be...!! >_<

Coming back to Xanga is like seeing an old friend or something...revisiting the past...haha

i also went ahead and took the supervillain test! mua ha ha!

Just for the guys at IGN's Gamescoop

i apologize to the people who usually read this blog and are confused by this entry, but by now you should know that any semblance of reason or rationality has gone right out the window a long time ago...haha

i listen to a Podcast called Gamescoop, and it provides with many happy listening hours--this comes especially handy when on long train rides down to kansai. an integral part of the Gamescoop team is their glorious "SCOOOOP!" which they yell. while walking along the streets of my small town in Japan, i found this store, and i had to take a picture.

DSCN2737

AMAZING AND AMUSEMENT!! i move that this be the Gamescoop slogan (not replacing the glorious SCOOP! of course)--for Japan at least haha. the Japanese above the "Engrish" is just the name of the shopping area.

DSCN2738

so yes, SCOOP is a little shop full of odds and ends...they had a bunch of Star Wars stuff in there like some shirts and even a darth vader helmet.

well, i hope the folks at Gamescoop, as well as the people who read this, get a lil kick out of this. =)

いろいろ

well, hello there! been a while, and lots has happened. here are some high lights!

DSCN2895
this is me with one of my fellow teachers (he is quite popular among the girls of the school haha). for Halloween, i borrowed his extra school uniform (he is a graduate of our high school) and wore the uniform throughout the day. it shocked many teachers and students. haha

DSCN2902
this picture was taken by some of my students. some students told me the uniform really suited me, while others thought i was a student outright. one asked if i got a new haircut or something haha good times

DSCN2905
this picture was taken with some of my 3rd year students. this class was one of my favorite classes last year. this wee we had 球技大会, which is Ball Game Competition Day, i guess you can say. i decided to go all out and wear my recently acquired Rutgers Football jersey and represent (yo yo). my kids thought it was awesome and were all really curious about it. only two kids (two first year girls of all people) knew right off the bat that it was an American football jersey and not a basketball jersey.

DSCN2906
i took this picture with some of the other 3rd year kids i played with. for some reason, they had a SpongeBob plushie in their room and wanted to include him in the pic. haha good times

DSCN2910
recently i ordered a pair Nike shoes (custom!) from the Nike website. it was actually cheaper than buying the shoes from a store in Japan, and mroe importantly--they have my size. i've had rotten luck when trying to find my size here. they fit really nicely, and the students, again, were all like "woah, awesome shoes!" one of the teachers (the crosscountry coach) even asked me "Those shoes are wonderful! Do such shoes exist in Japan??"

DSCN2911
on the website, you can customize the shoes by choosing the colors, designs, logos, etc. i even opted to have stuff written on the shoes. on my right foot is "Fukui," and on my left foot is "Toyama"--my two homes in Japan. i am through and through a Hokuriku person...haha these are my homes in Japan--the places i've been, the places i wish to go to.

well that's it for now. sorry, i've been pretty lazy lately and haven't been taking many pictures. it also appears my English is rapidly deteriorating.... haha until next time!

能楽

hello again!  this past monday i was invited by one of the part-time teachers at my school to attend a Noh Theater festival where professionals and students of Noh would perform.  it was quite the experience.

this is an excerpt of the script of the play 羽衣, or "Wing Clothes" i guess you can translate it as...?  haha it's all written in 草書 script, so it's difficult to read, but it looks really cool!  notice the marks in the margins?  the dots and dashes and such are guides for the actors/singers in terms of how they should say/sing the lines.

this is the main dance of 羽衣。the whole premise (in super simple terms) is that there is this angel who couldn't go back to heaven so she gets these clothes from this guy (her "wings") which will enable her to get back to heaven...or something rather.  haha  it's soooooo hard to hear and understand what they are saying, but it sounds really cool....creepy even!  in a good way of course.

i was sitting in the very front row so i had an awesome view of things.

this was a segment where there were just choral singers reciting lines.  i didn't like these segments as much as the others because well, i had no idea what they were saying.  haha  they just sat there and chanted, so it was less appealing than the other ones which had dance and costume.

this was a scene from 船弁慶, about the legendary warrior Benkei.  Benkei wielded a halberd, so the dancer wielded one too.  this guy is not yet a master, and the teachers who were sitting on the stage yelled directions/corrections at him when he made a slight error.  厳しい...!!  you can see behind one lady in the picture there is a guy in black.  that's a teacher, and they sat behind pupils to give them lines/correct their lines, pretty much tell them if they're wrong haha  tough stuff...!

this is a scene from the final act of the day.  i don't remember the title, but i remember how excellent the main performer's control was.  i was told later that the person in mask and costume was indeed a master performer.

it was...kinda creepy.  haha  good stuff, good stuff!

i remember in university, i studied Noh theater in relation to Kurosawa Akira's films.  i remember one article i read describing Noh theater as "The Art of Walking."  it really is, as dances are sometimes comprised of walks across the stage.  the control presented in the movements though, is really something to behold.  though i really enjoyed the Noh performances, i was there for almost 6 hours watching various Noh stuffs.  my butt really hurt after sitting on those hard chairs for so long...haha  but that aside, i would really recommend seeing Noh if you can!!
