| Heath LedgerHello, everyone! I saw news of Heath Ledger's death on CNN Wednesday evening. I'm not a huge fan of his or anything but I was disturbed by what seemed to be the sensationalism of the coverage. This is not new and I won't be saying anything new or noteworthy about the media's tendency to sensationalize news coverage when a celebrity dies.
What I thought about most that evening and during a conversation yesterday was: "The media's spending so much time on this guy because he's a dead celebrity, not because of who he was." I'm more than a little ashamed to admit this, but I catch myself thinking about the death of a writer or musician I love and I think, "Boy, won't it be sad when they die because then they won't be writing/singing new things for me to read or listen to."
I think it's really important to remember that there's so much more to people than what they do for a living and how their job benefits us as readers or listeners.
Heath Ledger had a two-year-old. Spare a thought for her.

| MiscellaneaHey, everyone! Congress should forget this steroids thing. Note that I'm not a supporter of steroids. Congress is trying to play a part in punishing players that aren't even playing anymore for things that happened long ago. When you call "Palmeiro" "Palmerry", credibility suffers as well!
Also, I freely admit to being one of those people that enjoys Christmas music all year. I was listening to "Away in a Manger" recently and my attention was caught by the line about cattle lowing. I thought, "What in the world is "lowing" anyway? No, I don't know why I thought this after singing/hearing the song thousands of times. Anyway, after some investigation, to "low" is to "moo." How about that?
Finally, there ought to be a way to get more people to women's athletics. Title IX mandates an equal number of men's and/or more women's sports to receive federal monies It's a complete sham if very few people show up to women's games. What good is a sport nobody comes to? Thoughts?
Enjoy the holiday!

| A Favorite Hi, everyone. I figured I'd write something on here... Happy New Year!
I'm watching the movie based on one of my absolute favorite books! It's magical!
(Yes, I know I'm a bookish nerd...I can't help it!) Hope you're all doing well!

| Hey, everyone! I have a free evening...YAY!
Here's what's been going on:
I got a job around a month ago in Interlibrary Loan at Kent State Library. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I've gotten things ready to send to Harvard and Australia! How cool is that? I'm certainly never bored...!
Over the last few weeks, I've talked to a lot of people about my list of places to see before I die. (By the way, if you have such a list, I'd love to see what's on it!) In the summer of 2005, I knocked off two of them on the same trip: France (Paris, in particular) and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club where Wimbledon, the Grand Slam tennis tournament is played. Needless to say, I'll never forget those visits.
In the summer of 2006, I was fortunate enough to receive tickets to the Final of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters tennis tournament in Mason, Ohio. I got to see Andy Roddick win it! "Attend a world-class pro tennis tournament final...check!"
Sunday and Tuesday, I was able to check yet another one off my list when my family and I attended the Division I Women's Basketball Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. I knew that I'd have to write about my experiences there as soon as we got close to the building.
Endless excited chatter swirled around the outside of the building as fans lined up to get in. Everyone was decked out in their respective team's colors: Tennessee's bright orange, LSU's purple and gold, North Carolina's powder blue and Rutgers' red. People didn't have to yell to let you know they were extremely excited to be there. The smiles took up entire faces as fans chatted with their families, friends, and fellow alumni.
More to come as th evening progresses...the Cleveland Cavaliers are in the #2 spot for the playoffs and the Indians came very close to a 3-0 start...not bad for a stretch of Cleveland sports. We'll see how long it lasts!

| CompendiumHello, everyone! This one may get a little long...action-packed two weeks or so for me! On the sixth of this month, I got to go to the Cavs-Nets game in Cleveland with a very good college friend of mine and his girlfriend. We had a great time, no doubt helped by the fact that they won... Next was the abysmal National Championship game <sniff>, hats off to the Gators...GEEZ! Since that time the Cavaliers have gone on a six-game winning streak and a three-game losing streak: up and down they go and I go right with them...GOODNESS! Ah, well, as Paul says, "Such is the life of a Cleveland sports fan." Yet, I keep rooting for these hometown teams. I guess that'd make me a masochist...!
There is some positive news on the sport side of things. The Smithville (my alma mater!) Lady Smithies basketball team is on a roll having won five straight contests! They remain just a game back in the hunt for the Wayne County Athletic League regular season title...GO GET IT, LADIES! (Hi, Becs and Sara! )
Also, the #7 nationally-ranked Ohio State Buckeye men's basketball team rolled over Iowa tonight: HOORAY and my Kent State Golden Flashes (the men) triumphed by one over the Bowling Green State University Falcons...WOOHOO!
I had a very successful interview for a (paid!, part-time and temporary, but who cares?) library position at the University of Akron...now all I can do is wait. I was/still am very excited just to get the chance to interview!
I started library school for the semester again on Tuesday...I LOVE MY CLASS! "The Academic Library" fits me, I believe.
I have been reading some excellent books...check out Julie Powell's Julie and Julia if you get a chance. It chronicles one woman's almost single-minded pursuit to cook the 500+ recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year. Absolutely crazy; the hilarity of this book fits the outright zaniness of such a goal. By mid-book if not before, you'll be cheering her on! One thing: she is very vulgar, so proceed with caution.
In the near future, I plan to tackle Sen. Barack Obama's latest book, The Audacity of Hope.. Sen. Obama is a Democratic Presidential hopeful for 2008. It should be interesting to see what he has to say. Most likely, my commentary on his work will find its way here in some form.
That's all for now...hope you're all having good weekends! By the way, what are you guys reading?
