| Happy New Year! The Letter Cc God's Gift of our Friends Kindergarten
January 4th-8th Dear Parents, Welcome back! I hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year and enjoyed the time off with your families. I missed all of the little ones and I am looking forward to the second half of our year together. This week we will celebrate the new year in class with some new year's activities and projects and we will share and write about our winter holidays and new year's resolutions. We will also begin our brand new "Handwriting Book." Our "Letter of the Week" will be Cc and we will make couscous in class on Friday. In math we will work on numbers 1-15 as well as the ordinal numbers first through twelfth. As part of the homework this week, your child will bring home his/her first "book report." Please let your child choose a book that he/she enjoys to write about in the book report. Please ask your child to describe and draw about what happens in the beginning, middle, and end of the story as well as the characters in the book. You may help your child by writing down his/her "words" but I ask that the children dictate what they would like to say and draw their own pictures. The same applies to the "Five Senses" activity. In religion this week we will begin to discuss God's gift of our friends as well as the end of the Christmas season. As we are now in the second half of the school year, "rest time" after lunch will now be optional. If your child does not wish to rest he/she will have the opportunity to explore books (choice reading) for about 20 minutes, as the other grades do. Lastly, I want to thank everyone for all of your help during the holiday season--for helping with our field trip, our show, and our class party, and for selling raffle tickets-our fundraiser did quite well and we raised quite a bit. I am very proud of our kindergarten class! Have a wonderful week! Sincerely, Miss Giovannoni | | |
| Merry Christmas! December 14th-18th Kindergarten
Dear Parents, I want to thank everyone who helped drive and chaperone for our field trip to Salesian last Friday. You helped make our field trip a big success and the children had a wonderful time. This week in our kindergarten class we will continue to celebrate advent and prepare for Christmas. We will take a break from "The Letter of the Week" (no sharing this week) and will instead be working on making Christmas cards for those who have donated to our school, cookies for the members of the Senior Citizens' Center and our eighth grade buddies, and gifts for our families. On Wednesday our eighth grade buddies will visit us and we will make gingerbread houses together. On Thursday we will walk to the Senior Citizens' Center on Macdonald Avenue to go Christmas caroling, and on Friday at 9:00 a.m. we will perform Christmas songs in the gym. Our class Christmas party will be at 11:00 a.m. in the classroom. If you have signed up in the class to bring food for this party, please see me to confirm which dish you will be bringing. All families are welcomed to attend. Lastly, all raffle tickets and money should be turned in to me by Thursday, December 17th so that I can count to see which child sold the most tickets. Remember that the person who sold the most tickets wins a scooter as well. The drawing will be held during the morning assembly the morning of Friday, December 18th. Thank you so much! Have a wonderful Christmas and enjoy your time off with your families! There will be no homework during the winter break.
Sincerely,
Miss Giovannoni

| The Season of Advent The Letter Ii December 7th-11th Kindergarten
Dear Parents, In class this week we will be learning about the religious season of advent, as we wait for the celebration of Jesus's birth. We use our advent wreath in class while saying a special daily prayer, and look forward to finding a little something special in our advent calendar each day. It is the season of giving and there are many people who could use our help during this holiday season. I encourage each family to support our school in bringing in cans and boxes of non-perishable foods that will be given to people in need. You can bring them to the office or send them to me and I will deliver them. Also, our school has a "Giving Tree" in the foyer. You can choose an item that you would like to donate to a person or family and receive an ornament that represents your gift. Lastly, our music teacher, Mrs. Jones is organizing a "Clothes Closet." You may contribute by bringing in toothpaste, clothes, diapers or other items and place them in the box outside the kindergarten class. Our kindergarten students will be learning about giving to others and ways that we can do service in our community. We are practicing some songs that we will sing to the members of the Richmond Senior Citizen's Center next week on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. We will be walking and I am looking for a few parent chaperones that would be able to join us. Each kindergartner will make a Christmas card to bring to the seniors and we will make some cookies to share with them as well. Our "Letter of the Week" will be Ii and we will be working on recognizing the vowel sound in the middle of words as well as at the beginning. In math we will be working with the numbers 1-12 as well as the ordinal numbers first through twelfth. Please let me know as soon as possible if you will be able to drive on our field trip to Salesian High School's annual Christmas party this Friday (December 11th) and remember that you need full coverage driver's insurance. We will need parent drivers/chaperones in order to attend this event and I know it will be a lot of fun for the children. Also, children weighing under 60 pounds will need to bring their car seats or booster seats. Lastly, the children will be making "gingerbread" houses with their eighth grade buddies next week so please help us by bringing in bags of powdered sugar, Honey Maid graham crackers and tiny candy decorations. Thank you so much!
Sincerely,
Miss Giovannoni

| The Letter Kk God's Gift of our Families November 30th-December 4th Kindergarten
Dear Parents, I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday and enjoyed the time off with your families. Thank you for your contributions to our Thanksgiving feast here at St. Cornelius. I know that the children really enjoyed our celebration! This week in class our religion topic will be God's gift of our families. Please have your child finish and bring in his or her own family tree. Remember that your child may choose the design of the tree but please include at least one family photo. We will display them in class for everyone to enjoy. Our "Letter of the Week" will be Kk and we will learn some interesting fun facts about kangaroos and koalas. We will make a book about a little kangaroo in class and will look at photos and videos of these animals on the internet. We will also make patterned fruit kabobs in class on Friday with real fruit and we will work on some more complicated patterns. Friday will be "Crazy Pattern Day" and the children are encouraged to wear crazy mismatched patterns (for example: a striped shirt with polka dot pants or a plaid skirt with striped tights and a polka dot sweater.) The children are learning that a pattern is anything that repeats the same thing over and over again. We will read some more mini books that involve word families and rhymes and work on writing and "inventive spelling" in our journals. In math we will learn about words that describe the position of objects (left/right, above/below, before/ between/after, over/on/under, in front/behind, in/out, through, etc.) We will use position words when exploring a new computer game and when working on our kangaroo book as well. I enjoyed meeting with most of you during our parent/teacher conferences. If you did not get a chance to meet with me, please let me know if you would like to set up a time to do so and we can schedule something after school. Thank you and have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
Miss Giovannoni

| Happy Thanksgiving! November 23rd-24th Kindergarten Dear Parents, I want to remind anyone who has not already signed up for a parent/teacher conference to do so in the office. Conferences are today (Monday, November 23rd) and tomorrow (Tuesday, November 24th.) Tomorrow will be our school-wide Thanksgiving feast and we are no longer being asked to bring mashed potatoes as Mr. Figueroa from the first grade has offered to donate them from his job at K.F.C. We are being asked to bring only the dinner rolls and the kindergarten turkeys have been donated by the Ugalde and Perez families. In class this week we will do some fun Thanksgiving projects and discuss all of the many gifts that God has given us. We have a lot to be thankful for! We have wonderful families, many good friends and a great kindergarten class. Attached are some more songs for your child's song book that we will be learning at school. Your child's only homework assignment this week is to make a family tree at home to bring in to share with the class after the break. The children can be as creative as they would like and can design their tree however they choose. I just ask that their family tree includes at least one family photo. Also be sure to bring in your child's baby photo (if you have not done so already) so that we will be able to play "Name that Baby!" Also if you need more raffle tickets to sell please let me know. Thank you so much for all of your donations and support and have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!
Sincerely,
Miss Giovannoni
