So over the past day or two, I've been doing a lot of thinking about politics. To make a long story short, I've developed a new theory I like to call "The Hippie's Paradox." I just thought I'd throw it out there and see if it floats.

So for this theory, we will define "hippie" as an atheistic left-wing tree hugger. Also, we must explore some of the basic concepts of the evolution theory. The evolution theory basically says life came from nothing. Through a series of chance events, life formed. Since that fateful day, the world has changed. It used to be one giant continent. Dinosaurs were once roaming the planet. They were eliminated supposedly by a giant rock hitting the earth. The world went through an ice age where Michigan was basically a chunck of ice. Yet through survival of the fittest and evolution of the species, life found a way and is still abundent today.

Now let's look at the tree hugger aspect. Hippies tend to oppose drilling for oil in ANWR, building Nuclear power plants, building more oil refineries, driving gas guzzling vehicles, the cutting down of rain forests, the list goes on. It seems so many of these hippies are opposed to these acts which could have an effect on the environment. They fear drilling in ANWR will hurt the caribou population. They worry that nuclear power plants will make fish glow and/or die. They think oil refineries will put harmful chemicals in the air. They think cutting down rain forests will kill any life in those areas.

And there lies the paradox. On one hand, hippies believe that through all these drastic changes in the world, life found a way. When a meteor struck earth, killing dinosaurs, life still found a way. When the ice age came and went, life found a way to endure. But when a group of oil drillers want to drill for oil using a piece of land about the size of my home town in a wildlife refuge the size of Rhode Island, Mass., and New Jersey, they act like life won't be able to exist anymore. They reject the idea of nuclear power plants partly because they worry about the temperature change to the body of water. This despite the fact that sea and lake life seemed to have made it through the ice age.

So which one is what they believe? Do they think that life spawned from practically nothing and throughout the violent history of the earth it found a way to continue to exist? Or do they think man carries enough power to eliminate life from the planet? The fact of the matter is, to think both is extremely illogical. So next time you run into a hippie, tell them they can't have their primortial soup and eat it too.
