It's been a while since I last posted... the last was the last time I came out to LA. But this time, I'm back in LA for good. I returned from NY today, and it still feels like I'm only here for a little while. When we were flying over California, I was astonished to see how much like a topography map it is, with its hills and scrub. It almost looked exactly like the models they have in museums. LA is so dry and brown.
I've been back for a day and already I've seen my oldest brother, sister-in-law, and nephew, had tacos from Taco Lita, picked fruit from our garden, and had Din Tai Fung and Taiwanese shaved ice (barley, lychees, peaches, and tang yuen topped with condensed milk!) with my parents and Alice! It feels like vacation.
I'm back in LA. I can't believe I fit all of my belongings into two 50 lbs suitcases, a very heavy backpack, and a big bag that held a lamp, clock radio, and hairdryer.
I'm back in LA but I don't think it'll really sink in until later.
It's been over a month since I last posted, and a whole lot has changed.
The lady I was subbing for quit so I am going to stay in NY until the end of the school year. I took a road trip with Alice across the country. I came back to NYC.
That basically sums it up.

When I was a kid, Easter didn't seem anywhere near as important as Christmas was. Maybe it had to do with more decorations. Maybe it had to do with the fact that Easter is more fictionally commercialized than Christmas is (Easter = a bunny and eggs, Christmas = has Santa Claus but there's still the focus on Christ's birth)
But any Christian knows that Easter is the true celebration. It's what our whole faith is based on. How can we not rejoice and be filled with thanksgiving on the anniversary of Jesus' death? Maybe Easter isn't as big socially because it doesn't seem kosher to celebrate someone's death. But if you understood that Jesus' death meant our eternal life, our hope, you'd get up and celebrate too.
So yes, Jesus' death is not a happy thing, and we shouldn't forget the pain and suffering that He went through. But what happened 3 days after... that is something to rejoice about.
So I say with much joy: He has risen! =) Happy Easter!

Oi.
I was a "careful" kid growing up. I mean, I climbed trees, but I didn't learn how to ride a bike until I was in college. The most hardcore thing I'd do during recess would be hanging upside down on the jungle gym or playing four square. I wouldn't go exploring the neighborhood or cruising the streets. Believe me. In a suburb, it takes too long to get from point A to point B. Needless to say, I've never broken a bone or needed stitches.
But, seeing how I'm going to be jobless and insurance- less when I move home, I thought I'd take advantage before my insurance ran out. I've been going through a flurry of doctor and dentist appointments. I have a mole birthmark that's smaller than my pinky nail on my right shoulder. It's been the same size since I can remember. The dermatologist looked at it and said it was fine, but suggested that I get it removed. Let me tell you... having out-patient surgery is the weirdest thing.
They put novacaine on the spot, so while you don't feel pain, you can feel pressure, and... tugging. So, while the process didn't hurt, the mental image of the process was really weirding me out. I'm sure it was routine for the doctor, but I could feel him sewing me together! Ack! He said that it was a good thing the mole wasn't near my ear b/c people who do can hear it. *shudder*
So yes, I'm sure it's safe to assume that I don't enjoy stitches. I can't really tell if I'm feeling the tape pulling at my skin or if I'm feeling the aftermath of the incision. It's like a slow burn/stinging sensation... and I need to be careful when I laugh. Haha. Yes, even though the site is on my shoulder.
Haha, I can't help but think of when Peter Griffin when he hurts his knee.
Haha, I'm such a baby. I don't know how I'll ever be able to handle any serious surgery or injury in the future.
Huh, it just occured to me that I'll literally be leaving a piece of me in New York! Haha. Gross, I know.
Oh, oh!! On a completely different note, congratulations to Natalie (Chan) and Mike on their new baby boy's arrival! His name is Joshua Aidan Liu!
I have a snow day!!!!! (my first, and probably last!)
I didn't really sleep in b/c I didn't find out that there was no school until I got to school and saw the gate still locked, but still! NO SCHOOL!!! Haha. Apparently, it's the first snow day in 5 years! Whoopee!!
Here are a pictures of my walk back home from the subway:
But let me use this free day to update you on a few things:
So my exit from NYC is still planned for Saturday, March 21. But from January until now, I've done a lot of things I had wanted to do. I went to the Frick Museum, had roasted corn from Habana Cafe, tried to get tickets to SNL (to see Jason Mraz perform), went to a Colbert Report taping, ate at Eatery, visited Point Cafe (it's a knitting cafe), had amazing blueberry pie at Good Enough to Eat... I think I'm just about done with my list. I probably only need to go to Top of the Rock and... the Morgan Library, maybe?
Tips for getting into SNL: You're probably going to need to go and camp out. Yoon-hee, Nicole, and I went at 5am (they hand tickets out at 7am) and after 2 hrs of standing, we had the choice of standby ticket #65 for the live taping or #67 for the rehearsal. That means that there were over 120 people ahead of us, and we got there at 5am! Boo. I heard that they only took the first 6 standby people for the rehearsal, and I think only 10 people got in to the live taping. So if you are not the first 10 people, go home. But if you really really want to camp out, and it's 20 degrees (w/o considering the windchill factor), make sure that your have not only your normal layers, gloves, hats, scarves, but remember your feet! They start freezing and you lose circulation and... it's just bad. So go get feet heat packs. They're essential!!
Tips for getting into The Colbert Report: Get to the studio at 3pm and wait in the standby line. They start taking names at 4pm. They'll tell you to come back at 5:15-5:30pm. At that time, they start handing out tickets to the ticket holders and the first 10 of the standby people usually get in. They let you into the holding area around 6:30pm, you go in, enjoy The Colbert Report, and you're out by 8pm! It's a lot of fun! Go if you have a chance! Waaaaaay easier to get into, and so much more entertaining than SNL.
a parting thought: this is Harrington, my roommate's dog. He's a Coton de Tulear, but he doesn't look like my brother's dog, Broadie. Harry's a bit more scrappy looking. Hee hee, he's such a little rascal!
I was inspired by Tree330 to make a map of places I've eaten at or things I've done in NYC so over winter break, I got started. It's still a work in progress, but take a gander. (If you have suggestions, let me know and I'll add it on!)
Around NYC (let me know if you'd like the link to the page, or if you'd like to add anything.)
View Larger Map I just went through my xanga, all the way back to 7-25-04 and... I have done a lot of things out here!
I've been talking to my friend back home about taking a road trip across the country to help me move back. While I'm excited about the prospect of seeing Historical Williamsburg in Virginia, going on a wild horse safari in Corolla, NC, and seeing Wingy in St. Louis, amongst other things, it's so strange to think that I'll be leaving NY on March 20. *gasp* March 20!! And that's it!
It's been a good time of learning, growing, and experiencing... it's just bittersweet to acknowledge that I only have 11 weeks to hit all of those yellow markers on my map!
