Iraqi Sunsets... Again

Are well... still freakin' sweet.

Readers be Warned! I lose my internet tomorrow, so the next few weeks of updates will be very irregular. For my mil-blog readers (you random awesome people who read my journal because I'm in Iraq), I'm afraid my mil-blogging will end in about one month, as I will be a civilian again

Only in Iraq

As I’m parking the truck the other day, I’m distracted by a wrecked semi-truck. I guess the driver fell asleep or something and rear-ended the guy in front of him. He’s okay, and this really has nothing to do with the story. As I’m staring and driving by, something odd catches my eye, a large animal with bunny ears, just chilling out next to the truck: a donkey! For some reason I find something oddly hilarious about donkeys, especially one that loiters on a US military installation; I crack up laughing.

The story goes: the donkey wandered straight through the entrance of the base. Since the guards are told to keep terrorists out, not donkeys, she apparently didn’t have much trouble accomplishing this.

Shortly after my discovery, a civilian woman who heard about the donkey shows up. We feed it and give it some water. She then leads it to her living area on foot to nurture it for a little while. Well, military policy says we can’t have pet donkeys, so within an hour, some Special Forces soldiers kidnap the donkey, stick it in a truck, and dropped it off at the town a couple miles from our base.

Two hours later the donkey was once again waiting outside our gate.

Turns out she just wanted to borrow a copy of Shrek.
