When I was a kid I didn't have too many toys.

So we had to find or invent games and such.

Insects were a good source of fun. Particularly in pitting them against one another.

I've always felt that insects were perfect micro-machines of sorts. So it wasn't very different from watching the Transformers on TV.

E.g. plucking the wings off flies and throwing them into ants' nests, throwing a grasshopper at a spider's web, etc.

And of course, fighting spiders.

I acquired, eventually, this adult thing called 'empathy'.

So I started imagining how it looks and feels like from their points of view.

That, however, did not bring about any sense of remorse, guilt, or shame.

On the contrary, all I felt was absurdity.

It is absolutely absurd, from the insects' points of view, that this huge hairy monster comes along, captures me, and forces me to fight with my neighbours. What the fuck for?

I reckon insects don't quite understand how sadistic, humans can be.

And when it comes to dogs and cats or any other animal that's cute and furry, the absurdity acquires a new significance.

Why is this huge hairy monster always trying to touch me? It seems unable to help its need to rub its hands all over my body. What is wrong with humans?

I reckon dogs and cats don't quite understand how sadistic, and lonely, humans can be.

And that, perhaps, we are sadistic, because we are lonely.

Some people find clichés instructive and inspirational.

Enough to use them for themselves, and as ready-to-go advice for friends whining about something.

I think that's dangerous.

To raise a few examples from the advices given by facebook users to other facebook users.

"Live like it's the last day of your life".

If it's the last day of my life, I'll probably kill all my enemies, rob a bank, urinate in the Supreme Court, and fire my bazooka at the Great Wall of China.

"Don't be affected by what others think of you"

If I were to disregard what others think of me, I'll probably kill all my enemies, rob a bank, urinate in the Supreme Court, and fire my bazooka at the Great Wall of China - in the nude.

And that is no way to lead my life at all.

I reckon human existence is so varied and complex that any attempt at summing it up in a single statement always leads to the exclusion of critical variables - that makes human existence varied and complex.

I reckon, then, that the best summary of existence, response to whiners, and perhaps a theme for a short film, would be a well-calibrated:

"Indeed".

Going to the airport always elicits some mixed emotions.

Besides bringing back unpleasant memories of 2004.

It's the chance to urinate in Changi.

The airport administration had somehow become privy to the human psyche.

Particularly that of the male.

I tried taking a photograph of the urinal, but that would seem hentai from the point of view of the cleaner standing a few feet away.

Right in the middle of each urinal, is an icon of a fly.

Perhaps deep inside each man.

Is the desire to drown flies with pee.

That begs the question: are they merely trying to get us to aim better.

Or to drink more water?
