Writer's Block

I want to create. I want to spill onto the page my thoughts and feelings, build with words and explore the depth and breadth of the human condition through prose. Wanting is not doing, however, and intent without action is immaterial. And yet I find myself unable to follow through with these desires; I sit, I stare at a blank page (or these days, more often than not, a blank Word document) and nothing comes. It is frustrating beyond my ability to convey, though in this I am not alone. Another close friend is having the same problem, and we've explored the possible reasons for it.

My theory, which is also supported in general principle by my friend, is that the state of the world as we are given to believe is currently so depraved and malicious, so inimicably teetering at the brink of complete collapse, that we cannot find the joy we need to write. Unlike many writers, I do not do my best work amidst chaos and despair, but rather find inspiration in the uplifting, the goodly works of humanity. Of this, we are presented with next to nothing by today's media, and yet everywhere I look are stories of death and destruction: thousands dead in Iraq, mothers killing their own children, countries testing nuclear weapons...the list goes on and on.

This is not to say that I, personally, am unhappy. I have the love of a beautiful and intelligent woman, a good job, and I want for next to nothing in my day-to-day life. I do not complain at all about my current situation. I just wish that I could see more of the selflessness and compassion that I know the human race is capable of being put on display.
