    Dallas - SMU Lesson

Friday April 25 - Lesson at SMU w/renowned and esteemed professor Robert Guthrie

We worked over some Bach Menuets.

Also met with Erin Johnson and her family. Her dad was celebrating his 68th birthday and I met her brothers, too.

Nice weather in Dallas. SMU is still the same. I have to try to get back there more often.

YOUNG ARTIST SOLO & ENSEMBLE CONTEST

Just returned from a full day of competition for Student Musicians. I sent 17 soloists and 3 ensembles. 10 of the soloists earned a spot on the Winner's Concert which featured the 1st and 2nd Place Winners and was held this evening.

2 of the 3 ensembles placed also.

    Let's see -

    1st Grade - 1st place
    2nd Grade - 2nd place & 3rd place
    3rd Grade - 1st & 2nd place
    4th Grade - 2nd Place
    5th Grade - 4th Place
    6th Grade - 1st & 2nd Place
    7th Grade - 3rd Place
8th Grade - 1st Place (lots of 10's on that grading sheet!!)
    9th Grade - 2nd & 3rd Place
    11th Grade - 3rd Place
    12th Grade - 1st Place
    Elementary Ensemble - 2nd Place
Middle School Trio - 1st Place
High School Ens - 3rd Place

    SUMMARY: 6 1st place
    6 2nd Place
    4 3rd Place
    1 4th Place

The thing is, in this contest you didn't get First Place just for showing up and playing. There was scoring and minimum point requirements for each award level. It could be that there was only one competitor and they received 3rd place based on the scoring.

So, to have dominated in this way really does mean something. Good work, kids!

    TURNAROUND DAY

Wednesday things turned around a bit.

On Tuesday a couple of meetings that were supposed to happen didn't happen. Reasons range from food poisoning to unexpected death of a loved one. Not things you can trifle with.

But Wednesday, I was able to connect with Bill Swick - a teacher here in Las Vegas who I met in October at the GFA in Los Angeles...I spent much of the day at Las Vegas Academy with his guitar classes. I was happy just for the chance to observe what was going on there, but he invited me to speak to all of the classes, so that was cool. A great bunch of students over there!!

In the afternoon I was privileged to visit the Berns Suzuki School. So far they've got four guitar students in a new program with one of the UNLV guys as their teacher.

And after that, I had to turn around and go back to Houston.

    LAS VEGAS

This is my first trip to Vegas (baby....)

For starters, there is "The Cracked Egg." You can get a good breakfast there. I really like the quotes they have everywhere including the menu and various plaques around the walls.

    Here's one of my faves:

"A hen is only an egg's way of making another egg." - Samuel Butler

Beside that we have the University of Nevada - Las Vegas where I have thus far presented two sessions on Suzuki Guitar.
