Currently Reading
The Great Divorce
By C. S. Lewis
see related

Zach had a tolerably good weekend.  Debate went well.  Though I've discovered that NEDA (college league) is decidedly lopsided in terms of the quality of teams.  If you hit a previous NCFCA debate time from such esteemed schools such as Patrick Henry College, or Bob Jones University, you know your in for some awesome rounds remenicent of NCFCA rounds.  However, the sad part is that even in the varsity track you run against teams that just fail to understand the idea of CLASH (not in anyway a reference to the CA debate team) that is an intragal part of a successful debate.

In any case, it was awesome having a home tournament because many loyal (and mostly just interested) friends came and watched.  Plus the fact that we didn't have to travel!  Results: 6th place team and 4th place speaker.

Anyone else read "The Great Divorce"?  I just started reading it last night.  One of the few times this semester I've been able to pick up a non school related book.

yes, i've read it. It is quite a good book. It is pretty deep, though. I do remember getting a little confused. I should read it again.

that's my story.

Wow that sure gives NCFCA a good name. I guess it really shows we do strive for higher standards! Sometimes it's hard to tell when you're always surrounded by them. 4th place speaker eh? Sounds like you're doing well! My first tournement with Jon B. is on the 18th. It's been strange having so little time to prepare....we'll see how it goes!

Btw, what does GDTBA stand for? jw.  See you in 1 1/2 months!

So, when you say lopsided, do mean that some of the teams are absolutely terrible, and others are great? I'm sure that you are part of the latter. But, I'm glad that you're classes are continuing to challenge you. As for The Great Divorve, I have not read that one; it never really appealed to me. Allie read it and I don't think that she cared much for it. Are you enjoying it?

So yeah, salsa is absolutely fantastic. I'd be happy to teach you at Christmas; it will be nice to have a partner besides my sisters to dance with.

OK, so that entire post made absolutely no sense to me, seeing as I really no nothing about debate (other than that it occurs in most of my classes here at Berkeley). But congrats on doing well--I think. 6th is good, right? OK, I'm ignorant about the logistics of debate.

The Great Divorce, yes, I have read it. Honestly, I pretty much detest the writings of C.S. Lewis (I really hope that's not anti-Christian or anything!). I don't know, but his work just never struck a chord with me at all. The only one I relatively enjoyed was The Screwtape Letters. But back to The Great Divorce. In my opinion, it was AMAZING compared to his other works (I've got a kind of best of the worst mindset going here), but definitely way down on the totem pole of good books I've read. Hope I don't taint your perception of it or anything. How are you enjoying it?

By the way, you're extremely lucky. Picking up a non-school related book is so not even an option for me! LoL! Let's just say that Berkeley does a very, very good job of seeing to it that their English students are doing nothing but academic reading 24/7! LoL!
