  • Costa Rica pt 1

the journey to costa rica began at 4:00am on july 16.  with groggy eyes we piled into the car and drove to the san jose airport.  after making it through security we boarded the plane and took off to houston.  we arrived in houston around noon and waited for our next flight.  lets just say that even though the houston airport is HUGE six hours of being there does things to your head.  becca and i played pass the pigs for a good hour or so and we met up with my auntie and uncle.  we finally got on the plane and 3.5 hours later arrived in san jose costa rica, where it was pouring rain.
we went to this small hotel and it had a pool so we went swimming at 10ish.

in the morning we drove to puntarenas, where my cousin lives.  we stayed at this really nice place.  we were actually the first ones to stay there.  it had a pool too, which we used every night and almost everyday.

we met greivin, my cousins husband now, and he took us on a tour to tortuga island the day before the wedding.  he made us lobster for lunch and it was spectacular!!  it was like heaven in my mouth.  the ocean was super warm, becca found a crab, and we played soccer on the beach.

becca had an unfortunate accident with greivin.  his knee ended up being swollen a little.

he gave us white wine with our lunch....

the wild boars come out because of all the tourists and we got to pet them.

we passed a boat that caught a huge sea bass and greivin bought it and we had it for dinner.
this is their house, right on the estuary.  jen and greivin live upstairs and the rest of his family live downstairs.  they have a "guard" dog... or puppy named coco.

  • so what happens when there are six teenagers, lots of time, and about $8 each?  well a bunch of nerf wars, duh.
so yesterday, chris, tim, and eric came over.  to start the afternoon, we decided to battle with a game of taboo- girls vs boys.  rachel began the game and we got a whopping 7 points.  there were some pretty amazing turns in this game.  whats the first word that comes to your mind when you hear the word face?  well apparently its "lift"... or at least thats what rachel and i said at the same time.  go us.  (by the way, lift was the word we were sposed to say).
so anyways, after eric left we decided it would be a great idea to buy nerf guns and have a war.  so off we went to target. we came back with six guns and sixty extra darts.  we set up the field with all the junk that came back from school with me, plus a few more things, split up into teams, and shot each other to pieces.

    yay for sisters...

    teammates at one point

    emo team

    intense action shot

    wipe out!!!

    whats a war without casualties?

shoot at the camera man... er rachel...

well it was a glorious way to spend the evening.   who wouldnt want to spend two hours shooting nerf darts at other people right?

    its good to be smart?

so yesterday as i was digging through some of my things trying to find a book, i found my high school diploma and the super ugly yellow nhs thing that i got for being in nhs.  it made me think of a bunch of things like why i had to pay for something that ugly in the first place. anyways i continued rummaging through my stuff and it occurred to me that i have a lot of books.  then i thought about how much money i probably spent on those books.  and then it hit me, i have spent a lot of money because i want to be smart.  now, if you really think about it, does that make sense?  it is really expensive to be smart.  you have to pay for college, pay to be in clubs, pay for books, pay for, well a lot of stuff.  so my question...
why do they make it so difficult and expensive for people to be smart?  why dont they make it difficult and expensive for people to be stupid?
im thinking that if they did this i wouldnt have to be annoyed by all those stupid people out there and american schools might go up in the ratings.

  • lots of stuff...

well this last week has been a long long week.  on monday i went to the doctor for my foot and had it fixed. now that i have a hole in it yet again life has been slower.  i got to take tuesday and wednesday off and it was glorious.  on tuesday people came over and we watched juno, played settlers, and slacklined.  it wasnt a bad way to spend a day off, tho im pretty sure that going to the beach would have been fun too.  on wednesday i just chilled on the couch and got mad at iphoto... pretty not exciting.  and i got my hair cut, but its not really any different.  it was on this day that i also came to a surprising realization.  no matter how much i hate work, it gives me something to do.   work is getting a lot better.  its more interesting and ive figured out that if i go the speed limit it takes longer to get back which means i will have less time to file and do other tedious tasks.  so maybe im glad im working, especially cuz i get paid a lot, or decently.  i will probably always feel like i sold my soul.
on thursday i got to watch the brother graduate.  that was pretty exciting.  i've decided that people are crazy cuz we got there an hour before it started and the good side of the stadium was already filled.  then the blow horn didnt work and it spewed stuff on me.... thanks for that brett.  so basically josh didnt get all the noise that he could have and the next few people got some extra stuff.  then there was a huge party with lots of food.
and then there are the fires in santa cruz which means that the sky was this lovely poo brown color.  and there were ashes everywhere, which makes it nasty to live outside in the backyard.   but the sun was pretty.  it was bright pink and orange.  and as i was falling asleep, i saw a star!! and i know it wasnt an airplane cuz i watched it for ten minutes.  i dont even know how it was shining through all that nastiness.

    MOCHI!!!  it was delicious.

  • life in the summer

so these last few weeks have been pretty interesting.  ive been working my life away, but while im not there its been relaxing.   basically ive been hanging out with the guys, playing settlers, and listening to the sister have anxiety attacks.  here is an example of one such attack.

well ok, so ive done more than that.  like i drove to hollister twice in one day.  but thats pretty much it actually.
oh, but here are some pictures....

this is the first time we set the slackline up in san jo.  it was at the guys' birthday party.

then we took it down and rachel, becca, and tim were wrapped up in it.   then they couldnt get out and someone pushed them over.  then they were really really stuck.  in an awkward position.

this is just an amazing book.

and this is the sign that ashley needs outside her bedroom door.

  • well, i have returned from the colorado road trip and let me just say, it was amazing.  except for utah.  that was the worst state ever.

ok, so day one: ashley and i went to bg's house.  we slept for 5 hours?  something like that and left at 5am.

day 2:  we spent the whole day driving.  it was quite the eventful day.  i drove from the end of ca to the beginning of utah, nevada and arizona being in between those.  there was rain in utah and construction.  and about a gazillion miles of nothing where there were no services at all the stops.  however, after a few life threatening situations, we made it to co alive.  when we reached vail we decided to tell katie that we had a flat tire so we could surprise her when we got to her house.  it was hilarious but so fun to see her reaction.

day 3: we woke up and after much thought we ended up at the mall.  we walked around, ate lunch, and went into borders.  there, ashley and i read all the post-secret books and, well i dont know what katie and bethany did.  after this we went to rei and bought a slackline!! yaya! it was awesome.  we set it up and had some good times on it.

day 4: we went to the denver zoo.  it was super fun.  however, there was a little problem.  when we reached the bongo enclosure, bg's sunglasses fell in.  this was tragic.  those sunglasses were as important as apple juice is to a toddler or as video games are to a boy's birthday party or as wool socks are to trek.  these sunglasses needed to be rescued.  rather than despair, we came up with a solution.  since the bongos didnt look like a ferocious animal, and since they were al sleeping in the other end of the enclosure, ashley, being the brave soul she is, decided that she would risk her life and jump into the enclosure for the sake of the glasses.  so in she jumped.  the glasses were tossed up to us, where there was a joyful reunion between them and bg.  but, in the midst of this joy, rose a problem.  even though she was able to perform many great feats, like climbing the tower of power and jumping into the lake in february, she was not able to scale the great wall between her and freedom.  to put it simply, she was stuck.  noticing the perilous situation, she proceeded to the corner of the enclosure in an attempt to use both walls to escape.  by this time, a crowd was drawing and it became imperative that ashley escape.  too late tho, an employee of the zoo had seen us.  there were some angry words and ashley was led out the back way and we were met by a lovely chap in a beige uniform.  we were given a stern lecture by the man and then we were escorted out of the zoo with a warning that should we return, there would be complications.  yes, we were banned from the zoo forever.  for three of us it was not a terrible thing, being that we were from california, but for katie it was a sad sad realization.  after this incident we went to get food and boba.

day 5: we went to boulder.  i got to see my relatives, which was fun for me at least, then we went to pearl street mall and ate and walked about.  it was crowded, but fun.  at 11pm we departed the house of the scroggs for the coast.

day 6: we traveled through 5 states and arrived at bg's once again.  ashley and i then moved in the onward direction to the 210.  we visited bobby in crestview and after getting lost a few times, arrived in simi valley to visit none other than katie burns.  with much joy we met at a jamba juice.  we then went to a park to slackline and then to her house, where, after an unfortunate and slightly embarrassing event, we played the wii and chatted.  at 9:30ish we departed yet again for the northern part of the state.  after taking some wrong and/or pointless roads, we made it to the 101.  4 or 5 hours later we arrived in hollister.

day 7: ashley and i woke up at 11:30 ish and ate some delicious pancakes.  we cleaned out the car and i left for san jo.  well it was just me by this point and after an uneventful and rather short drive of about less than an hour, i arrived at the home fort.  the family was gone however and after saying hello to the pooches, left for a birthday bash.  it was great fun and involved slacklining and guitar hero.

and that is the end of the great road trip to colorado to return katie's stuff.  there was a plethora of slacklining, laughter, movies, scheming, driving, and well, cool stuff.
    here are some pictures...

    slacklining:

  • lazy lazy lazy day....

today has to be one of the most lazy days of my life.
last night i decided that i enjoyed going to bed early and waking up early.  so i did that.  i went to bed at 11 on my back porch.  it was... not as exciting as one would think.  it was hot.  i hate heat.  but i managed to fall asleep, despite people being over until 3 in the morning (ewwic and teem you crazy people).  apparently i shocked my mom by doing that but i dont know why considering i slept in much more exciting places during the semester.  anyways i woke up at 7:30 and decided that i would go running.  so a mile and a half later i returned, showered, and started to work on my reflection for my service credit thing.  i sat on the couch around 9:30 and, well, im still here 8 hours later.  its taken me that long to look at blogs, look at all my pictures, figure out things on my computer, and write less than a page of reflections.  talk about productive.  i think this is a record for me.
so coming home has opened my eyes to all of the changes that have taken place since i left home.  the first thing i noticed was that the house was no longer blue and white.  it is now red and beige?  something like that.  i like it.  then i spotted an xbox.  when did that get here?  well i found out that it was my brother's friend's xbox so thats not that exciting anymore.  the next thing that is new is the hammock on the back porch that will be my bed for the next week.  and lastly is that rebecca has morals.
so there you have it.  lots of change some good, some bad and actually that last one is more of a joke.  but after 8 hours of sitting on this couch i think its time to go get some dinner for me and the sister.
    goodbye internet.
