OH No She DIDN'T!

oh yes, she did

oh yes, her ass is getting towed

(for those of you who don't know, I've had an ongoing parking war with my next door neighbor, who likes to park in our driveway on street cleaning day.  After repeated attempts to explain and warn her, the time has come for her cruddy old red honda civic hatchback to go.)

So Not My Scene

When was the last time you were in a situation where you felt totally out of place?

I was just thinking about a night like this:

The settup:  A few of my coworkers and I decide to go to the 3am opening of a movie together.  We're all going to be up anyways because we all work nights (7pm-7am).  Part of the fun of working nights is the special bond you form with co-workers because you're all stuck in the same situation of working all night and you might as well make the best of it and have fun; also, you can do random late outings together.  One of my co-workers knows a friend who owns a bar, so we decided to meet up there beforehand.

The scene:  Archive Library, a small bar in Santa Fe Springs specializing in $3 Newcastles and 80's music.  This bar was blazing 80's music, and had a small dance floor.  So I get there, and I immediately feel out of place.  First of all, I don't really dig 80's music unless if it's U2, Janet Jackson, or a select few others.  Second of all, I don't really go to bars to hook-up, but a lot of people do!    Within 10 minutes, I had a guy trailing me.  Before moving into panic mode, I danced my way over to my co-worker and kinda pretended I was his best buddy and driver so the guy wouldn't get any ideas.

I made the best of the night and continued to dance the night away, but came away thinking, "so this is how people hook up in the real world."  It's was so easy, yet, I know the quality was probably low.  I guess that's the trade off of getting the easy-yet-low-quality-date vs. the dificult-yet-high-quality-and-potential-life-partner-date.

Now that I got that out of my system, it's time to hit the books!

Post Office Redemption

I officially forgive the US Post Office for its recent 2 cent stamp hike.

Why, might you ask?

Three words:

STAR WARS STAMPS!!!!!!

Star Wars (Souvenir Sheet)

Yes, I am a nerd.

Hockey is Fun

Method of procrastination today : Stanley Cup Finals (Ducks vs. Ottowa Senators)

I love watching hockey....Like a typical girl, I don't know much about this sport (wtf is a powerplay?), but I'm just drawn to watching these guys somehow play a sport with amazing athleticism while constatly pounding each other.  Each time there is a fight, I start thinking yes, Yes! YES!  and I don't have to feel guilty about it cause that's part of the game!  Sigh, contact sports.

------------------------------------------

In other news, I will finally answer the questions posed by hopeandharmony :

1. We've all heard about the neighbor who stole your parking space in the driveway.  (Grrr...)  Please tell us about a positive experience you've had since moving into your neighborhood.

One cool thing I discovered was when I was tutoring at Temple Intermediate.  My tutee (sp?) was talking about his three dogs two of which were chows  I thought to myself, hey, my back neighbor has two chows (and some other dog).   Turned out he's our behind the wall neighbor.  Cool little things like that happen pretty often when you live in the neighborhood in which you serve.

2.  What is a passion of yours (besides Star Wars)?

Besides Star Wars? (j/k)  Well, I honestly love my job, but I'll talk about that later.  My sincere passion is my relationship with God.  I hope my life reflects the joy and love of God, and my character that of Jesus.

3.  Most rewarding experience in the ER?

I love it when the ER is at its best, someone comes in with a problem, and we fix it.  In the ER, I do EKGs (heart rythm reading) which shows if someone is having a heart attack instantly.  If we get that reading, we activate what we call a code STEMI where everyone in the ER comes together to make sure the patient is getting everything he or she needs (blood tests, medication) before going to surgery.  Our avering time from door to surgery is less than 90mins.

Being a part of this team is always rewarding when everything gets done right and fast.

4.  What was your most recent purchase as part of the higakichan fashion makeover?

If it was up to me, my wardrobe would consist soley of cargo pants, cargo shorts, comfy tee shirts, tank tops, and sweaters (and scrubs for work).  Luckily, I've had a few roomates with more fashion sense than me, including Higakichan.  Most recent purchase was a pair of tan capri shorts and a summery shirt.

5.  What is your favorite place in L.A. that I probably have not yet discovered?

UCLA!  Haha, really though, I love gardens.  I  love the Getty, the Huntington and the LA Arboreatum in Arcadia.  There are some pretty cool hiking trails in the nearby San Gabriel mountains that Eldwin and Christina Truong introduced me to.

One of my favorite night spots is actually in the OC, a jazz club called Steamers in Fullerton.  No cover on weekdays, reasonably priced food, and cool artists are some highlights.  Poncho Sanchez, a latin jazz star, is a frequent player and always fun to go see.

Let me know if you'd like some questions : )

10 Reasons NOT to get a cat

Higakichan wants to get a cat.

As of now, I'm anticat.  Here's why....

1.  Cats are prissy.  They totally have attitude and will never dial 911 for you when you're dying.  In fact, the cat would probably make you its new scratching post.

2.  Litter boxes.  They're ugly, smelly, and have cheesy names.

3.  Lots of people are allergic to cats.  Not too many people are allergic to dogs, or fish, or gerbils for that matter.

4.  Part of it's genetic.  My dad hates cats.  He used to have a licence plate frame that said "Will flatten cats while you wait."

5.  Cats don't love you. They love to tear your furniture, and claw people.  They only love the food you provide for them.

6.  Cat's will turn on you in an instant.  I've seen quite a few people in the ER with a cat bite from THEIR cat.

7.  Cleaning up litter boxes.  Come on, they REALLY smell.

8.  Cat movies suck.  Ex.: That Darn Cat, the Aristocats (no not everybody wants to be a cat), Garfield and the agonizing sequel Garfield - A Tale of Two Kitties, need I say more?

9.  Hair balls.  The bane of Puss (in boots) in Shrek.

10.  Every time I see that Fancy Feast commercial where the woman feeds her cat "Elegant Medleys," restaurant inspired cat food - with grilled salmon and fresh greens - it makes me want to hurl and then kill a spoiled cat, and then the cat-spoiler.

Maybe Higakichan will eventually win me over, but as for now I remain firmly Anticat.
