dazed and confused

DSCN0514

5AM new york, lower east side.
five youths, too hunched and too high,
but oh i feel invincible in this fortress
built of bumbags, tiny cigarette fires,
and inappropriate footwear slapping against the frozen cement,
toes on the pulse of this city, fingers
like quick slivers of moonlight.

where to go at night in new york...
mon: m darkroom
tues: happy ending

i apply slight pressure to my thumb and forefinger, finding that 'spine' demarcation on the lined surface with my fingernails, and the brittle --or not so brittle-- peanut shell crackles and cracks open. this is a precise skill, i tell you. sometimes there is one, sometimes two, peanuts wearing a sienna brown or purply brown leotard sitting pretty inside; other times, there is dust (there is something like dust when one breaks a regular peanut shell open, as well, but only a puff), and whatever sat inside is long shrivelled in itself, with just a little hard kernel lying obscenely exposed. if one were to taste this, it would taste bitter and foul to the strawberry tongue. trust me. ive tried.

what does dust taste like?

now i stare at the peanuts harder, because suddenly scary names come to mind. and with them, bad cliches. here, someone may liken me to proust, for instance, only, maybe if he were born a canadian, in some canadian tavern where there are masses of peanut shells scattered on the floor. the particularly wrinkled one with the ominous liver spots, that one looks like dead grandmaman. she had awful spots and wrinkles carved into her like a traditional dance mask; younger, i feared her face would crack if she changed expressions. i know what that one tastes like, and sweep it aside with the empty broken shells.

what happens between the alpha and the omega? what makes these lose whatever they lose to wear their skin so loosely?

and i read that there is a crisis in the american peanut butter tradition due to the significant number of children who are increasingly allergic.

"nuts."

it's that time of the year.

dry dry winter.

your skin is chapped, lips are chapped, hair is chapped, your overall demeanour is...

chapped.

this is what ive been doing lately, and it works for me in keeping any part of me not chapped. so, im sharing, whether you like it or not.

1. fresh sugar face polish.
allegedly exfoliates, but for me, it moisturises, and i use it like night soap, after using the bobbi brown makeup remover and lancome neurowhite x3 cleanser. the best thing about this face polish, however, is the scent. brown sugar with a pinch of lemon and something gingery sweet...i want to chew my hand off and eat it, it smells so yummy.

2. fresh meadowcream hair treatment.
the scent is very similar to the above sugar face polish, only more gentle on the sweet notes, which is a good thing. i actually want this to be a perfume. i am actually sniffing my hair as i write this. i can't stop. it does some things for the hair, as well, namely, makes it less frizzy.

3. laura mercier creme brulee honey bath.
use it like shower gel. smells yummy and makes you sing. other 'gourmand' products have nothing on laura mercier.

4. fresh sake bath
smells like peaches. not so yummy as all of the above, actually, but for unexplained reasons, when you take a scolding hot bath with this sake elixir stirred into the water...your body thanks you wham bam thank you maam and naturally goes easily to sleep. really. it's happened to me a few times. insomniacs, take note.

5. aveeno skin relief moisturizing lotion.
it's cheap, yes. but maybe to my advantage it is the only thing that works. locks that moisture in, and saves my poor skin from getting itchy & scratchy & show. your body thanks you and bitch you buy another bottle.

6. neutrogena white sesame moisturizing oil.
apply generously after the above aveeno to lock that wetness in even further. yes, you like that, don't you...

7. laura mercier french vanilla body souffle.
this, i use not really as body lotion, but just a dab on the wrist, behind the ears, around my ankles, and behind my knees...yes, as winter day scent. a brilliant alternative to cloying and boring garden variety perfumes usually on the market.

8. chanel precision age delay nuit
this goes on the hands as hand cream. your hand will look like paris hilton's before she even attempted mimicking manual labour on a simple life. use on neck, too, if you want, to avoid turkey neck later.

9. mac lip treatment.
this is sold in a tube, now, which is a happy step-up from the previous tub. i dont like picking the balm out from under my nail after.

10. good hard crush.
this cannot be bought for money--usually.
maybe do #1 - 9 with said crush?

what are your 10 winter battle secret moves?

frustration, or, how to be young

peter bjorn and john, 'young folks' should be playing while obsessing about an older man (he is only a year older...). talking heads then, with 'this must be the place' fingering my plane ticket to new york. thinking about these two things of course leads to hot chip's 'touch too much' and doing exactly this but then because im also 'in touch' with my florence nightingale--and very possibly my oblivious and embarassing 'adult rock' loving alter ego-- cue the fray with 'look after you' and quickly fade into aqualung's 'easier to lie.' because he's a recovering heroine addict, and i try and try; but my braver brighter self is not nearly as brave or bright enough. it is the same conclusion reached a hundred and one frustrating, exhausting, different ways. it's too bad 3minutes and 52 seconds can stir up and convey things that 3months cannot.

if i were a musician, id die of depression and envy.

and sekiden's pinball summer...this is why people say id love brisbane.
