So I had an interesting conversation with Ty.. as usual.. we ended
up decided to agree that we disagree with each other (like always)..
(which is weird because like him.. i'm a left libertarian (though not
as large of one as him).. but still.. i think its just upbringing that
changes a lot of things)... but anyway.. what I was curious
about.. was other peoples thoughts on the issue..
Beth: *shakes head* i dont know if judging someone by their political stance is a good way to say they are a good or bad person
Ty: mmm
Beth: yes it may say a few things about your personality (ie: conservative or not).. but that doesnt make you good or bad
Ty: however, where you stand on social issues, which are a part of politics, does make you a good or bad person
Beth: i dont agree there either
Ty: ok
Beth: give me an example of your idea of social issues?
Ty: abortion, gay marriage, race, foreign aid, sex education in school, birth control, religion in school, profiling, umm...
Beth:
abortion.. i think its not a good thing unless the woman/baby is in
need.. but just becasue someone disagrees with me or thinks its a good
thing.. doesnt make them a bad person.. Gay marriage.. I think
its wrong.. but because i think its wrong.. but i'm not a bad person..
and those who agree with it.. arent bad people.. race.. depends
on this one more indepth and things.. race is very broad issue..
Beth: foreign
aide.. ? not sure how its a social issue.. but i think I
may.. but still.. just because one does or does not want foriegn
aide.. or is willing to give it.. doesnt make them a wrong/bad
person.. birth control.. ok so i think its a little ridiculous
when people forswear birth control.. but still doesnt make them a bad
person..
Beth:
religion in school.. a little ridiculous to take ALL religion out of
school because you take away a kids right to practice his own religion
at lunch..
Ty
abortion: I don't care what anyone things about it personally, it's not
their right to decide for someone else (i.e. it's amoral to prohibit it
by law)
Gay Marriage: It is immoral to deny someone a right you have yourself
Foreign Aid: refusal to help those you can is immoral (and yes, at the
times in my life when I am making money, a substantial portion of it
goes to charity)
Birth Control: Not educating teenagers about how to protect themselves is criminal negligence
Religion In School: any sanctioning of religion in school (including
the Pledge in its current incarnation) is immoral, this in fact means
that ANYONE can practice whatever they feel like at lunch
Beth:
but still.. judging someone by their views is whats wrong.. saying
because something THINKS something should be that way does not make
them a bad person.. and again.. this is your view of things.. I may
think that .. refusing aide to someone is a RIGHT that I have.. does
that make me a bad person?? no..
Ty: I agree what you are within your rights to refuse to give aid, but I still think you are morally obligated to help others
Beth:
but see.. telling someone they are morally obligated to do something..
is just the same as saying they are immoral for doing something..
Ty: yes
Beth:
but do you see what i'm saying? that telling someone its their
moral duty to do something.. how do you judge morality? each person to
their own.. its and objective thing.. each person has their own views
of what is moral and what is not
Ty: what you're promoting is a system called Absolute Moral Relativism, which just doesn't work
Beth:
i'm not promoting it.. but to judge someone Their person and who they
are.. on moral issues isnt good.. because what they think is moral is
different from you
Ty: a person's morality is what makes them good or bad (assuming they follow their morality as closely as possible)
Beth: right.. but still objective.. still judging without really knowing the person..
Beth: how someone acts .. yes you can judge them.. but many moral issues.. most people do not mess with or deal with..
Ty:
I don't agree, if you know someone's morals, you know wither they're a
good or a bad person, I separate this from their being a likable
person, or a fun person, or an aggravating person, all of which take
time to find out
Beth: ok.. but still disagreeing.. because I know a lot of right wing/ authoritarian ... who are good people..
I'm just curious what other people think.. you are VERY free to say I'm
wrong.. but if you do.. PLEASE tell me why.. and prove me wrong or
something.. maybe i'll change my views... or your free to say i'm
right what ever.. its an opinion.. I'm curious...
