NRA and Shooting

I was reading an article that was discussing the European media's reaction to yesterday's shooting at Virginia Tech.  Some of the European media is apparently blaming the NRA and indirectly Charlton Heston because of gun control measures.  They are saying the NRA is responsible for the "scope of the killings."  Here is the link:  Link

In America, "buying a machine gun is often easier than getting a driver's license."

Is the NRA at least partial responsible for the high death count in yesterday's shooting?

There should probably be better gun control in general, but I don't blame lack of gun control for situations like this. These kinds of things seem to be more than simply about just gun control.

at least PARTIALLY. they did provide the weapons, because they're the ones enforcing a loose leash on guns.

Yeah, and NASCAR is partially responsible for traffic accidents and DUI's.  Ford and Chevy share much of the blame for the many automobile fatalities in the US today.  We need tighter control on maximum top speed and horsepower limitations.  V8's should only be available to law enforcement and military personnel.

Not directly, no. Not really even indirectly. UncleRebus stated it well.

When are we going to start holding people responsible for their own actions again? It's not Nature, it's not Nurture, it's Choice. That boy made a choice, a horrible choice, and we can't place the blame on anyone else but him.

not to over-simplify the issue, though. people always focus on either gun control and/or video games in situations like these, when really what needs the most attention when this happens is MENTAL ILLNESS>

^Just a question, RaVnR, but I'm curious... what handguns aren't semiautomatic (or full automatic) these days? The only ones I can think of are single-action revolvers like what they have in cowboy movies.

Wait, wasn't Virginia Tech a "gun free zone?" I thought that should protect them from such an event in the first place. We all know criminals obey the law, after all

I don't blame the NRA at all; they have their purpose and what they believe.  However, there does need to be better gun control and we needed it since the 80's.  However, if Columbine didn't radically change gun control or gang street volence, I sincerely doubt these shootings will.

I don't think we would ever know until we find out about the shooter, and why he did it.  But highly doubtful.
