| | Gary wins the title of Stinkiest Region in the Union. Hands
down. One time, on our way to my brother's wedding (incidentally,
a different brother this time) in Door County, Wis. my mom makes a
proclamation that Milwaukee is a smelly city and she never wants to
live there. I'm sure Chicago has an interesting odor, but of
course I'm used to it by now (some people don't care for our
water. I sometimes wonder what's wrong with them.). I
wonder if the stinch had any longterm adverse effects on Michael
Jackson ("Going Back to Gary."). Original Gangsters is an updated blaxploitation movie that should've been more fun, but it took place there.
I'm not sure why google maps lead me down this road. The
directions they gave me (Take I-90 to I-69) take me straight east to
the northeast section of Indiana (not much to brag about here, folks.)
and then straight north for a half state or so, over U of M and MSU, as
the party students are just returning. I-94 would've been a more
direct route. And I wouldn't have to pay tolls. Dang tolls,
paid over $6. Especially since I missed my exit.
Tim O called me back. He invited me to a screening of the original Star Wars at Grant Park. Being the nerd that I am, I would've gone in a heart beat. Being as far away as I am...
While I was fooling around with Mr. O I look up to note that my
junction is approaching in a mile. I'm also aware of the fact
that the expressway is under construction and only has one available
lane. But I keep looking for the signs. About to exit at
one point, but it doesn't look right. A couple miles further
down, I realize it was right. A couple miles later, I ask the
toll-man. "Oh, that was nine miles down the road. Yeah, you
missed that one."
Thanks. I'm so
upset. He tries to be helpful, there's nothing he can do about
it, so I don't take my anger out at him. I am, however, profanely
angry.
I get across the border and stop at the Welcome Station / Rest
Area.. Some states, eg., Wisconsin, its suburb to the north,
Canada - don't have Rest Areas. Why, because they hate tourists
and travellers. I thank God for Michigan. It truly is a
beautiful state to visit. And spend money in. So many
beautiful, old trees. So vibrant in greeness.
While at the rest stop, I take my first meditative read from the early
part of the Passion Week (the life of Jesus from the Triumphant
Entrance of Jerusalem to his arrest, Sunday to Thursday, I believe) on
the trip. I realize I haven't read anything prior in the day and
haven't been as meditative as I wanted to be.
"Abide in me. I will leave. I will send my Spirit.
You will remain in me by obeying me..." This is a good part of
the Gospel of John's focus for this period. It all seems to work
so beautifully, so elegantly, so earthly yet eternally.
On the next leg of the journey, I profusely apologize for that outbreak
earlier. If you've ever seen that episode where Flanders is angry
with God and almost misses church, but then drives there in a hurry, it
looked a little like that. "I'm sorry Jesus, I'm sorry Jesus!"
