Patience is a virtue, but in this day and age we may not think so . We like our instant coffees, instant noodles and fast-food joints. We like our mobile phones so that we could reach someone anywhere at anytime. We like to get our sports scores in real time. So basically if we want any service or information, we want it now. We can't stand lingering in idle mode. Heaven forbids if a web page takes an extra second to load. Our time is valuable so every second counts. After all, we are important people... aren't we?

I was reading something the other day, then ADD (attention deficit disorder) was referenced in a context I hadn't seen before. He said that some developers (ie computer programmers) have ADD because in programming a computer's feedback is instantaneous and thus a programmer is rewarded (or negatively enforced) by a computer for his actions. He enters this so-called hyperfocus mode where he becomes deeply engrossed in what he's doing because of the quick feedbacks. However, when this person drops into reality, he becomes impatient and easily distracted.  For example, in a conversation, a person may have hard time concentrating as in always tuning out or is constantly cutting someone off to get his word in. When reading something, the default mode is to skim. Or if someone speaks befor he thinks. --I call  it "quick responding mode"; where a person doesn't process the proposed question before he tries to reply.
This last case could be summed by a Leno joke where he goes to a fast food restaurant and say:

"Hi, I would like a burger and fries."

The clerk would respond: "Would you like fries with that?"

For the record, I don't agree that just because a person is distracted or is impatient means he or she has ADD. It's like saying if you're sad then clinically speaking, you have a mild case of depression. *hands you some pills and a prescription good for three refills* Some people blame ADD on video games, TV and movies; in this case it's computers.  If I end up being diagnosed with ADD I just blame it on Cheney and Bush Jr.  I blame them for all the bad stuff that has ever happend to my life.

Later,

Very true. I think the internet and just technology in general has made me more impatient than I used to be.

May I reprint this for next week's newsletter? I don't typically publish stuff like this, but I like the article so much. Here's what it would look like.
Patience is a Virtue

Have fun!

Even in the instance where medications are applied before anything else is another case in our society where quicker is "better". And often so, drugs are not needed, just a lil TLC in this very TLC-less world. =(

Its a crying shame where rarely anyone stops to just stop, look, and breathe. That is why I make an extra concious effort to do so at least once a day. Its good for the soul.

i do go to church regularly b/c for an hour it takes me away from my daily stresses and i like hearing the messages.

thank you most deeply for you kind words. recieving comments, particularly from well-thought, articulate individuals, truly is appreciated.   i still have not decided on the fate of my site, for i am watching these things run their course, and do not want to be left desperately pumping life into something when what i really should be doing is giving it a rest.  but i have been considering your suggestion, of simply taking a break, rather than destroying it completely. afterall, it has been a year of my life chronicled here - i do not wish to loose that.

ADD explained:

ADD is a over-used/misused medical term nowdays. For a child to have ADD, he/she cannot concentrate on anything at all. Typically, he/she is a very disruptive member of a classroom. They also perform poorly in school because of lack of concentration. This is just the opposite to programmers, who can focus on one project for a long time. However, the medication of choice for this disorder is Ritalin (analog of amphetamine). So maybe there is a reason why this term is over-used.  :tongue1:

Also, the biggest difference between sadness and clinical depression is that depression will cause organic manifestations (loosing sig. amount of weight and sig insomnia) and will affect one's normal daily function/work/school. They have no energy, loose interest in all their previous activities, and want to kill themselves (sometimes with specific plans and tools)...

so there

cannot help it

Thanks Jen, I was waiting for either you, storyofnikita, or lummy-heart to give me the detailed medical explaination and distinction. I knew when I had written this I was just beginning for it. haha

:) agree most sincerely! over-concern with the acceptance and reassurance from strangers will undoubtably lead to self-censureship. which naturally then distorts the very nature of the art being produced. (though i hardly consider what i am doing art).

to answer your question: school-things are good, though wholey overwhelming.  five applications for graduate school have gone out with my name and hopes on them. some more may be bursting outward in the coming days, which only adds to the stress.  i will be finding out about one of the prospects in the next week or so (fingers-crossed).

non-school things are swell. my world has built up upon itself a secure sense of happiness (no longer correlated to the strange external and unpredictable). but, when the sun comes, and it does occasionally, i am literally a smile all over.

please tell me, how are things with you?
