I started working at this company on Monday; and I am thoroughly enjoying it. My boss and his wife treat me very well; and I love the conversations we have. I was busy the first two days at work trying to help finalize a contract deal with Procter & Gamble - but everything is done and my boss said he'd treat me out if the deal lands. (Might I add that I got a raise my third day working).
Well, ever since I started working, my boss talks to me about success in business + life every time he walks by my desk. He's been emphasizing the importance of networking and being patient.
He told me that we focus so much on working our way up the business (or status) ladder that we end up failing more often than not. It's okay to have a set goal in mind but patience is the key to opening the doors for greater opportunities. Find someone you want to work for and contact them to see if they will take you in to work under them. Quite literally, my boss said, "If they take you in, work under them as a subordinate, doing whatever work they give you and treat them as the Master."
Today's conversation was especially insightful. To sum up everything, he was encouraging me to not stress about a timely graduation but to take my time and build up my potential. In the long run, your graduation rate doesn't matter. What degree you graduate with doesn't matter. There will come a moment when you will cross paths with great opportunities and if you're not keeping your eyes and ears open to the things around you, you will lose the chance to take up on the opportunity. Travel the world! Meet people and network. Make sure Georgia is not all you know. It's all about experience and the more you travel, the more experience you will gain. Don't give up. Be patient and undoubtedly, an opportunity will come to you.
For some of you, what I wrote will not phase you. It's okay. Knowing my current status as a student (a struggling one at that), I found these words quite inspiring and uplifting. Here I am worrying about my graduation; rushing to graduate; and just trying to get done so I can move on with my life (outside of undergrad). Honestly, I'm still stressing - but now I find some comfort in knowing that opportunities can still come to me while in school. Even though society is all about the college degree, I stand firmly on the belief that I can succeed regardless of that degree. I know I am very capable to succeed.
Now. Let's get to it.
