| THEY'RE COMING TO PORTLAND 5/18!!!!!!!! My 20 year college reunion is this summer. OMG, I'm getting frickin' old. I adored this band, the Meat Puppets, during that time. They still rock my world. |
BACKWATER Meat Puppets And in the morning when I wake up To feel the daybreak on my face There’s blood that’s flowin’ through the feeling With a knife to open up the sky’s vein Some things never change They just stand there looking backwards Half unconscious from the pain They may seem rearranged In the backwater swirling There is something that’ll never change And when I shoulda been gone a long time Laughs and says I find ways Just when we’re sheltered under paper The rockets come at us sideways Hey I’m blind Good fine Roll the time On whose dime And in the morning when I wake up To feel the daybreak on my face There’s blood that’s flowin’ through the ceiling With a knife to open up the sky’s vein | from wikipedia: "Their early works (the In A Car EP and Meat Puppets LP) were wholeheartedly punk, with vocals so feral in their delivery they were often indecipherable, but ultimately humorous and ingenious once decyphered. The musicianship was mostly thrash, yet the songs were tinged with a subtle, haunting element like that of a long abandoned ghost town. Their brand of cathartic, explosive hardcore attracted the attention of legendary punk label SST, who released their first record in 1982. Unsatisfied with the result, the band spent plenty of time in the studio before the release of 1983's Meat Puppets II. The band's exciting experimentation with psychedelia, acid rock, and quieter tunes on top of a core western-style thrash sound, gave them their one acknowledged classic album, and propelled the record to legendary status. Meat Puppets II turned Meat Puppets into the one of the leading bands in SST Records league and, along with Violent Femmes, the Gun Club and others, helped establish country punk. |
As numerous bands from the seminal SST label, and other kindred punk-oriented indies, grappled with the "going major" decision, so did the 'Pups. Two years after their final studio recording for SST, 1989's Monsters, the trio released its major label debut, Forbidden Places, on the indie-friendly London Records. A three-year break saw the band's studio return with 1994's Too High To Die, produced by Butthole Surfers guitarist Paul Leary. The album featured "Backwater", a minor hit on alternative radio, and a hidden-track update of "Lake of Fire." Too High To Die earned the 'Pups a gold record (500,000 sold), outselling their previous records combined. That same year saw the 'Pups in their brightest mainstream spotlight as the band achieved sudden popularity when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain invited Cris and Curt to join him on MTV for acoustic performances of "Plateau", "Oh Me" and "Lake of Fire" (all originally from Meat Puppets II). ... The Meat Puppets have been recording in Austin, TX and the new album is planned for release in April, 2007. A national tour is to begin in March, 2007 at the South by Southwest Festival, also in Austin."
| My life in a nutshellOk, so I was born in San Francisco (Haight Ashbury) California, 10/27/65. My mom was a hippy. My Heritage is swiss, scottish, german, french, and dutch. As my parents didn't marry (and my dad left), I have issues about being iIllegitimate. When I was 2.5, mom had my lil bro Josh, who's not so little anymore (6'7"). When I was 9, we left CA (Exodus). Pictures of me through childhood and High School Photos. When I was 17, I met my dad. When I was 19, I got My first tattoo from my half-brother, while I was getting my BA in psychology at Reed and Filip visited. My Second Visit to Europe was when I was 19. My first r'ship was with E. when I was a senior in undergrad. I started in recovery in ACOA, AlAnon, CODA, SLAA, etc. after graduating from Reed. My Third Visit to Europe was when I was 24 (and the only picture of me with my father ever). Went to the tattoo convention in Amsterdam. My second tattoo was done on that trip. After school, I worked at a bookstore (Catbird Seat) for 4 years, before continuing on with Graduate School. I read a lot of religious, recovery and self-help books. My Spirituality: in my 20s. I was in a 7 year r'ship with Exhusband: B. My Final Visit to Europe was when I was 30 and my father was diagnosed with cancer that later claimed him. 30th Birthday. My father was a reknown tattoo artist. Pictures of my tattoos. My third tattoo, My fourth tattoo My Spirituality: in my 30s evolved obviously. Especially after my Move to Gorge where everyone is Christian. Working for Head Start, Return to Direct Service, I turned 40 more later | | |

| Repost from turtle_dove | Today in my career......or why I like my new jobWell, it was 1990 when I went to graduate school (at the age of 24) to start getting my Master's in Social Work. I interned the first year at a Teen Pregnancy program, to learn some of the basics of casemanagement. And the second year, I interned at an outpatient mental health agency, doing child and family therapy. After I graduated, I went to work for a similiar agency in the part of Portland that has a high percentage of low income and African-American families. I learned the ropes there about what it really meant to be a child and family therapist. I was there about 3 years. After that, I went to work for a similiar agency in the suburbs. Big change in ethnicity, but still serving families on medicaid primarily. There another 3 years. Then I took a job in Vancouver, WA, for better pay. It was a bit more modern agency, with computerized documentation and state of the art approach, etc. I was there also for about 3 years. It was at that last job that I became a foster parent. My mother was a foster parent first, for a program for teens in drug/alcohol treatment. She wanted me to become a respite care provider, so I could take her girl(s) on the weekend. I was roped into taking a girl of my own on the first phone call I made to inquire about the program. Within a few months, I was roped into a second girl. It didn't end well. I was way overloaded. When I finally quit that program, I decided I was totally burnt on social work. That was 5 years ago. I moved to The Dalles with the plan of switching careers. I actually worked for a season on a factory fishing boat in Alaska. That was a truly character building experience. But it also taught me to be thankful I get to work in social services. And I decided to return to doing what I do. Unfortunately, with the geographic move, my options for jobs were limited. So I finally got hired with Head Start, first as an Early Head Start home visitor, and quickly I was promoted to Family Services Coordinator, and eventually Mental Health Specialist. The whole 5 years I was underemployed though. And I was bored. And stressed. And frustrated. It was a highly administrative series of positions, influenced in large part by the program being Federally funded. So my new job* is like a rejuvenation. I am finally back on track. I am doing direct service with families and children. I can leave the administrative piece to others. I get to actually work with people. Phew! Plus, at Head Start I was the one mental health professional on staff. It was isolating and lonely. Now I'm one of almost 100. Yay! I have a community again. It's so cool. *My job is Child Mental Health Specialist for the System of Care at Mid-Columbia (Children's Council. oops) Center for Living. This is a wraparound program. You can read about one of the founders of this model here http://www.wraparoundsolutions.com/mary/mary.htm . I will be doing child and family therapy for children to young adults in Hood River county. I will be part of team that also provides a variety of other services besides therapy. It's going to be pretty exciting, although the agency I'm working for is going through a lot of transitions and growing pains. |
Sunday, May 21, 2006 Today I work as the Children's Clinical Supervisor and Child mental health specialist for the same mental health agency in the Columbia River Gorge area. Before that I was a Child & Family Therapist (LCSW=Licensed Clinical Social Worker) for over 10 years in the Portland/Beaverton/Vancouver area. In my current position, I provide mental health services to children receiving wraparound services. I have a B.A. '87 in psychology from Reed College, and a Master's in Social Work '92 from Portland State University. http://www.xanga.com/turtledove_counseling Saturday, January 13, 2007 Now I've been back on the regular mental health team for several months. I took a voluntary demotion. I am much, much happier.
