Jasmine Trias

Jasmine Soriano Trias (born November 3, 1986) is an American singer who was one
of the final three competitors on the third season of the reality/talent-search
television series American Idol.

Trias is from Mililani, Hawaii, has roots in Cavite, in the Philippines, and is
expected to graduate from Maryknoll High School in Honolulu, Hawaii in June
2004. Before American Idol, Trias had competed in several local talent
competitions, winning two of them: the "Brown Bags to Stardom" contest as a high
school freshman, and the "Road to Fame" youth talent search contest as a junior.

In 2003, Trias auditioned for the third season of American Idol in Honolulu,
Hawaii and was a member of the fourth group of semifinalists. She was one of
three semifinalists from Hawaii that year, along with Jonah Moananu and Camile
Velasco (who also made it to the finals). Unlike Velasco and Moananu, Trias had
not received much media attention prior to her appearance on Idol, and the local
media in Hawaii dubbed her the "Maryknoll Mystery Girl." She was the
second-place finisher behind John Stevens in her semifinal group, and became one
of the twelve finalists.

Trias received very positive reviews in the early rounds of the finals, but had
been criticized by judge Simon Cowell in the later rounds for being "merely
pleasant" and lacking originality.

Throughout the finals, she had received staunch support from the viewers in her
home state of Hawaii and Filipinos in the Philippines, especially after the
elimination of fellow Hawaii finalist Velasco. This level of support had not
gone unnoticed, and her longevity in the contest was due in large part to her
hometown support. Cowell remarked in his criticism of Trias' performance on May
11, 2004, "You had better hope that every household in Hawaii has at least five
telephones, because you're going to need all the support you can get." The next
day, after Trias was declared "safe," Cowell said, "I think, Jasmine, you have a
lot of thank-you letters to write to Hawaii."

For much of the finals, Trias' trademark adornment had been the flower that she
wore behind her right ear. In later shows, the flower was moved to other places
on her wardrobe, and sometimes didn't appear at all.
Jasmine Trias progressed to become one of the last three finalists on her season
of American Idol; she was voted off the show on the next-to-last week, on May
19, 2004.

INTERVIEW Q&A

When did you first start to sing?
Since I could talk.

Do you have any formal singing training?
Yes, I attend the Performing Artist Academy. I started when I was 8 years old and I stopped when I was 10. I went back when I was 14 years old.

What other talents do you have?
I play the piano, the ukulele, the guitar. I dance hip-hop and hula.

If you don’t make it on AMERICAN IDOL, what will you do?
I will continue to pursue a career in singing, or I will finish up my education and become a nurse.

What are your personal goals in life?
I want to have a recording contract with a big record company and live my dream of becoming a star. Or go to school and finish up my education to become a nurse.

What album would your friends be surprised you own?
A Filipino soap opera soundtrack.

What is the first CD you ever bought?
The NSYNC CD

What is in your CD player right now?
A mixed CD of different kinds of music.

Who is your AMERICAN IDOL?
I loved Kelly from the moment I heard her sing “Respect.”

What is your favorite type of music?
I love all kinds of music. I listen to Hawaiian music, R&B, hip-hop, alternative, contemporary.

What is your favorite song to sing?
I don’t have a favorite song. I love to sing power ballads and other styles of music.

Favorite male pop artist?
Justin Timberlake.

Favorite female pop artist?
Christina Aguilera.

Favorite album of all time?
A mixed CD of my top favorite songs.

Who in the music world do you think your style is most like?
I’d probably have to say Monica. She dressed sexy, but kept it conservative also.

Most embarrassing moment?
In 7th grade, I was drinking milk and my friend was telling me and my other friends a joke. When he said the punch line, I swallowed probably half and the rest squirted out of my nose and my mouth because I couldn’t hold in the laugh.

If you couldn’t sing, which talent would you most like to have?
Dancing.

What has been your proudest moment in life so far?
Making it this far in the competition.

What is your definition of an AMERICAN IDOL?
Someone that has the full package and has the charisma to make many people look up to them.

Why do you want to be an AMERICAN IDOL?
Because I think I have what it takes to make into the business. I’m a strong person and I want to share all my talents with the rest of world.

Who is your favorite judge and why?
I’d have to say Simon because even though his comments can be mean, they’re very true if you take it the right way. He doesn’t care what people think about him and I think that he’s the best judge.

Who is your least favorite judge and why?
My least favorite is Randy, because there’s only three words in his vocabulary: Dog, Man, and Dude.

What advice do you have for other hopefuls?
Sing your heart and don’t hold back. Don’t get intimidated by other great singers because you’re a great singer yourself, so just think that others may be intimidated by you. Confidence is key!

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I can be very shy.
