Make Love, Not War

I just came from a peace/anti-war rally that was held in Chandler Park today.  It was great.  It felt so good to be in the presence of like-mided people who all felt strongly about getting our troops out of Iraq.  There were really great guest speakers, good music, and lots of anti-war signs.  It was very powerful, I thought.  Zack and I had a great time, and I urge anyone else who feels that war is not the answer to go to a rally.  It was my first, and certainly not my last.

Almost Spring Break!  I can't wait.  I'm gonna go home, spend some time with my family, hang out with Bill and AJ and Emma.  I'm not sure if I'll be able to work or not.  I usually have to let them know two weeks in advance if I'm gonna be home for a certain amount of time.  No matter, it's gonna be fun.  Plus, I think it's time to sit down and have that long awaited talk with my dad.  I'll update in a "friends-only" post to let you all know how it goes.  A-Town, here I come!

Well, some things have come into light and I think my family is on the brink of a new era.  I'm not sure when, but it will be glorious when it happens.  Stay Tuned!

So I was on myspace and this friend of mine posted a bulletin that told a story about some girls on myspace that got killed by a myspace-stalker-dude.  At the end it said that I had to repost it or else my parents we're gonna get murdered.  WTF?!

- Sound of Silence

Warning:  this entry will be long.

So I was reading the Courier this morning and I read an article that got me thinking.  This guy was saying how he thinks that left-winged ideals are what's wrong with this country.  He talks about how he's got problems with abortion, drinking, pornography and homosexuality.  First of all, any guy who says he's got a problem with porn is full of shit.  You know he's got stacks of it in his closet.  Anyway, I was thinking that he was full of crap.  Who is he to attack these things?  Seeing as how I'm very liberal and opinionated, I was all ready to tell him to stick it.  But then I thought, this is how he feels.  If I'm entitled to my opinion, then he is too.

It made me think a little more.  I really don't think there is a right or wrong answer to the issues in this country.  You can't say liberals have it right, and you can't say conservatives have it right.  It all comes down to the individual.  It's about personal responsibility.  For example, I don't think I could ever get an abortion if the situation presented itself.  I just couldn't do it.  However, I think the right should be there for women who do want one, especially in cases of rape or incest.  A woman's body is her own.  I support the right, but I would never do it myself.  It's a personal choice.

I'm not a big drinker.  I've been drunk before, and I suffered the consequences when I drank too much.  Mostly when I drink, I'm not drunk.  I just drink socially.  The guy who wrote this article says alcohol gets people into trouble because they get violent and people end up getting hurt.  This is just not true in all cases.  Not everyone who drinks becomes violent, or even drunk for that matter.  Even when that does happen, don't blame the drink.  Blame the drinker.  You know what alcohol is, you know what it does to you.  If you get drunk, start acting stupid, and someone gets hurt, it's YOUR fault.  YOU made the decision to drink, fully knowing what alcohol can do to you if you drink too much.  It's a personal choice.

I'm not going to say much about pornography.  It's here, everyone has seen it one time or another.  If you're over 18 (and you're not a hermit or a mormon) and you say you haven't, you're lying.  The constitution protects the rights of adult film makers and photographers.  If you don't like it, don't look at it. It's a personal choice.

I believe that everyone deserves to love and be loved in return.  For some people, that love is found in someone else of the same gender.  I'm not a lesbian, but I have no problem with people who are gay.  To say it's wrong, and try to force a gay person to be with someone of the opposite gender is ludicrous.  To the dude who wrote this article, how would you like it if someone was forcing you to be with a guy?  You wouldn't like it at all, because that's not who you are.  So don't nag on people who are gay.  It's a personal choice.

This country is suppose to be about freedom and independence.  We have the right to make certain choices.  Some rights we have come with consequences that we as individuals need to be aware of.  It's ok to have your own personal set of values and beliefs, because that's what this country is supposed to be all about.  But to rag on other people for their way of life is just stupid.  It's hypocracy.  As an American - as a human being - we have the power to make decisions for ourselves.  When things go awry, don't blame sides.  Look to the individual.  Let's start taking some personal responsibility.
